I heard this story on London tonight one evening! Here is the BBC News article: "Marble Arch, has become marooned at the junctions of Oxford Street, Park Lane and Edgware Road in central London, and can only be reached by subway. Transport for London (TfL) is looking at moving it to Hyde Park and says proposals are in "very early stages". If approved the arch would stand over the road at Speakers' Corner........" news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4303919.stm

I remember hearing about this. I dunno whether it's such a "safe" idea but i can see why they want to do this

Curiously, the arch itself contains no explanatory plaque whatsoever detailing its history. Surely it must have had something once. Wonder what the tourists think!
I believe that some people mistake the Wellington Memorial (or arch) on Hyde Park Corner for Marble Arch.
And yes, I've heard plans for MA to be moved away from its island.

Wasn't it originally at the entrance to the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace?

It was originally to be the entrance to Buckingham Palace, don't know what it wasn't, did read somewhere it was to narrow for some of the old carriages. Also, the left hand side of the arch as you look north, was once the smallest police station in London! Can't really see the point in moving it, there are subways to the island.
