I live by one rule 50% of passengers are idiots 45% are lazy/ignorant/arrogant/scum and the other 5% are the type that thanks you/smiles/actually looks at you as they board. A perfect example of this is on the 368 when returing dead to the garage its almost impossible to locate "not in service" on those blinds without arm ache so i put something silly like pitsea broadway or basildon etc and guess what some prat sticks their arm out and then still gives you the finger when you keep going. I once blinded one of the 256 buses at GY (front AND sides) as a 160 going to Catford and drove it the length of the 256 route (excepting I went up Whitchurch Road instead of following line of route) and STILL had people stick their arm out You think thats bad. I was speaking to a mate of mine at Showbus who works for Brighton & Hove and they were on the Tilling RM and still people stuck their hand out. One man even ran down the road to get it only to realise when he caught up with it that it wasn't his bus.

They still request buses that have Private Hire, or Rail Replacement on display. all they see is a bus!!!
My best one though was when i was on the Athletes Village Shuttle service in Stratford, we were using EX Blue Triangle DP's and the Commercial NV's were our ferry buses to and from BX. i was on a late turn one day so took the ferry NV, which was NV 173 over to stratford via the Dartford Tunnel and the A13 etc. I got to stratford and was chatting to the controller over there when some woman came up to us and asked when the bus was leaving for the O2? What Bus to the O2???
Well i only forgot (yea right) that NV173 was used on the O2 shuttle service the night before and was still fully Blinded for the O2 Shuttle to VICTORIA via Charing Cross!! We politely advised her that the bus was not going to the O2 and that her best option was the Jubilee Line or a 108 form the bus station.

The other day after school i saw a 269 approaching on Bromley Common and i didnt bother putting my hand out because the bus was not in service and heading to Bromley North to begin it but the bus stopped and i saw people boarding. When i looked at the blind it said '269 Lewisham Stn' so i boarded and asked the driver are you on the 269 or 208 and he said 208 so i told him his front and side blinds were on 269 he then realised and changed the front one with the help of some yobs at the bus stop.
The people who boarded before me didnt think to ask what the bus was!!

Times I've done short workings on the 150 and people haven't taken ANY notice of what the overall destination is just the route number - and then queue the barrage of abuse from people who can't take the blame for their own laziness

I remember once leaving my house to catch a number 1 to Southend (an extra journey in a 20 minute service after doing a school run) and as i saw it in the distance i could see a lot of yellow on the number scrolls so just assumed the driver had used yellow blanks instead...alas he still had 408 on the front (as well as 60 on the side and 4A on the back but thats neither here nor there). And there already people on it, had they not thought to tell him? On another journey i was on a number 1 to Shoeburyness (and the LED display clearly stated this) and three people in a row asked for a destination heading towards Rayleigh (it was a stop used in both directions). And even then a fouth person with a free pass got on and as the bus turned towards Shoeburyness they explained to the driver "does this not go up the London Road?" to which the driver replied "it does...in about an hour after going to Shoeburyness" and the passenger had the nerve to say "you coulda told me" like they expected the driver to tell them it was for Shoeburyness!! And another time with my dad running a short journey on a number 9 we could only display "Special Service" so no route number...not one person where there was more than one route actually asked what it was!! I seriously wonder if these people would be dangerous with brains? Cheers PT

Displays "Please Ask Driver 190" on the front, "190 Ask Driver" on the side and "190" to the rear though I do question just how many people would actually ASK the driver or just moan when they are told the bus is going somewhere else

In fact, GY used to do the same for a Gooshays Drive turn on the 256. I normally inform the driver if their blind is incorrect, which normally happens on the 174 where a driver has forgotten to change the blind on their return trip. Must admit, when i ever i tell them, the driver usually seems quite embarressed. Probably more the fact that someone actually took the time to notice and tell them!! ;D

A lady of Far East origin today put her hand out when a 'Not In Service' MW WVL was approaching but still carried on even when the bus was right up close. Then she was looking amused when the bus went past and looked back to everyone else as if to say that the bus should of stopped. I wanted to laugh so much because it helps to READ .

Maybe she couldn't actually read it (English may not be her first language)?? Don't know exactly but it could be a reason. If I was with you at the time you'd have to try hard to stop me from laughing ;D Honestly though the amount of people I see trying to hail dead-running buses is ridiculous. The economics of running dead along the route are always questionable, somehow I feel a better timetable that allows buses to run in service to/from a garage (even if it is only part of a route) should be more cost effective than dead running.
