Buses, just like cars require the windows to be shut to get the full benefit of air con. I get annoyed when people try to open windows on trains and buses with air con - not normally too complementary about them either!

I find aircon on buses pretty useless. They make lots of noise and dont really make the bus cool. Could be due to what DLA has suggested about windows being open.
Ive also noticed alot of modern buses are losing heaters at the side of the seats and im guessing its because convector heaters and air con blowing hot air are better?

Were it not for health and safety, then sliding windows could make a return, much better than air-con or the silly hopper windows.

I find aircon on the Scania Omicitys the best aircon on buses In fact when I have boarded Omicitys and on routes such as 212 at St James Street/ Chingford and the 148 at White City I shut the windows because the aircon is so good.

Are you talking about PROPER air con or that useless forced air blowers on the the top deck of newer London buses? I admit the forced air blowers on deckers is a waste of time. It just makes a lot of noise with not much gain. But buses fitted with PROPER air con in VERY effective. In north west kent we have some routes call fastrack and their buses are fitted with full saloon air con and I can tell you when you get on one in the summer and its about 18oC inside the bus you know about it. Half of the fleet do not have opening windows at all and the other half have lockable opening windows. They learned with the first batch to have the openable windows because if the air con fails then the bus has to come out of service. They tried running buses with broken air con and no opening windows but had to pull them off the road when the temprature inside the saloon hit amlost 50oC So that explains why they have lockable windows. If the air con fails you have backup

If the air con fails you have backup Yeah i am mainly talking about the blowers. Ive noticed the 61 enviro 400 blowers at the front upstairs have been switched off as they were very noisy. The convector heaters in some buses i know were all switched off due to passengers complaining about the noise they made. They were switched back on this winter but i wonder if they will get switched off again soon. The proper air con on the Omnicity DDs are reasonably noisy but then again no air con units are silent. Just to make clear i dont have a huge problem with the noise but if an air con unit is very noisy then i have a problem with it. I dont know how others feel about that though. Most of the buses in my area do not have air conditioning so im probably only talking from the experiences ive had of the 64 Omni DDs when they were on the 119 for a while but i must say when sitting upstairs on them i started getting very cold! it was late winter and it was on its coldest setting lol.

Most buses dont have air conditioning but forced air cooling which even when it works is pretty useless. Most of the time they dont work so you are almost roasted alive. Heating on buses has improved but cooling has got worse. At least with the older style buses you had plenty of windows that opened to provide cooling now you are just left to sweat

What never makes sence is to specify opening windows on buses with full aircon, why not save money and have just one peice of glass which is easier to clean, and there is no openers to maintain. Opening windows are notoriously expensive to clean (most companies can't afford to do it, if you don't beleive me, take a white hankerchief and wipe it around the sides and corners of the open window).
