It will be a shame to see National Express lose c2c , going from the biggest operator in the UK to now the smallest but i personally think they operate the line very well i hope they keep it .

Is the Thameslink franchise the joint Thameslink/Southern operation that was being reported a few weeks back?

Is the Thameslink franchise the joint Thameslink/Southern operation that was being reported a few weeks back? The Thameslink franchise takes over Southern from 2015 so yes the winning bidder will end up taking on that bit of the network. It is going to be a very interesting franchise given the need to integrate lots of services into Thameslink and inevitable large scale timetable changes affecting much of the network south of the Thames.

Thanks for that Well I hope to god First don't win it then! As a daily Southern user, and seeing FCC trains running on the same lines, Southern do a far better job in keeping their rolling stock neat and clean, and running to time. Also I don't think I could face their hideous interior colour scheme every day! Southern's blues and greens are far more conducive to winding down after a long day. Personally I would like London Overground to take over London suburban Southern services so Southern concentrate on developing their longer-distance services.

It's a bit more than 'that bit of the network'. Southern stretches from Victoria right down to every part of Kent, the majority of Sussex & parts of Surrey. Personally, I'd prefer it if Southern was left to do what it currently does and give the Thameslink contract to Abellio & Stagecoach. Whilst I've never used Thameslink, every time I do see the trains, they don't exactly look clean & I've heard First aren't that good at running it either. Can anyone tell me who MTR and GoVia are, never heard of them before?

GoVIA is Go-Ahead and Keolis (a French company) combined, and MTR runs commuter trains in Hong Kong! Govia run Southern (+Gatwick Express), Southeastern and London Midland, while MTR own half of the consession for running LOROL (London Overground).

Keolis are part of SNCF (French National Railways) so yet another example of an European state railway bidding to take over UK rail. Govia had the Thameslink franchise before First took over. Keolis are also in partnership with First Group on the Trans Pennine Franchise.

Would it be wrong of me to state that I hope First keep Great Western, based on how well they improved the franchise?

To be fair the lines from Brighton to London are execptionally busy, but Southern, who use the same lines don't seem to have as much trouble. FCC's class 319's are disgustingly filthy inside and out, and look really poorly maintained- at least from an external perspective.
