Obviously we must wait for the DfT announcement but it seems as close to 100% true as possible that Virgin have lost and First Group have won. It is suggested that First Group have already registered new company names at Companies House to allow the transfer to commence. It is also suggested that Richard Parry, formerly of LU, will be the new West Coast MD. The papers are also suggesting Mr Branson may take legal action if First gain the franchise. www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/transport/9469224/Virgin-prepares-for-legal-fight-over-West-Coast-line.htmlThe suggested premium payments are eyewatering though. I do not see how First Group can earn enough money from the franchise to pay HM Treasury circa £500m a year.

Re-nationalise the whole rail industry! Travelling is a right! It was never going to work as an idea. Selling off something which is a captive market to a select few companies was pretty much going to guarantee a mess. It's the same case with energy suppliers.

Announcement of preferred bidder might be tomorrow at 7am -- if not it'll be delayed There are whispers going round that the announcement has been delayed but we shall see. Perhaps they are trying to make sure that they've locked Richard Branson up first? ;D ;D ;D

Ive already had enough of First since they're my local operator: FGW. Hate the 165s on the route. Hopefully they lose the GWML to someone else like Arriva, Stagecoach or National Express. IMO they dont deserve anymore since they already have FCC and FGW.

First do well with FGW but its taken them a long way to get to where they are now but they could be better. FGW is quite hard to run due to the stock which isnt great but they do the best they can which is given to them by the DfT. First also have the Transpennine contract. I do agree FCC is crap.

I do not see how First Group can earn enough money from the franchise to pay HM Treasury circa £500m a year. First are walking away from the Great Western franchise three years early, saving them £800m, so there's money left in the kitty for West Coast (source - railforum-uk)
