Hey all, Just a quick note from me to say that tomorrow (13 Jan), there will be a steam train running along the northern part of the sub surface network, as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversery of the operation of London Underground. A bit more detailed infomation, including timings, can be viewed here; www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2013/01/07/best-places-to-photograph-london-undergrounds-heritage-steam-train-trips/Obviously a massive event, expect it to be busy with spectators at stations along the route, was just wondering if anyone going? I will be , after work, to get some pictures and a video if poss. Steve

Excellent video Chris!
Does anyone know what time it will be running next Sunday? Will be in London for other reasons that day, and I hope to be able to see it then.

Erm I was told it would be running for 3 consecutive weekends. You can ask one of the staff at Kensington Olympia or any other station it by-passes in order to get a shot. This morning it left Kensington Olympia around 9:50am I think by that time I was on the 27 trying to out run it to High Street Kensington and my luck turn out great with only 3mins to spare. However, along my travels I did see the scruffy looking Boris Johnson lurking about the station, he looked like he'd just came out of bed this morning.. ;D

It runs in the evening next Sunday and that's it until later in the year. The Ianvisits blog has some outline timings for next Sunday. The train will shuttle back and forth between Moorgate and Baker St a couple of times in between runs to and from Olympia. I think it will run in reverse formation - Sarah Siddons heading eastbound trains and Met No1 heading west. This is the opposite to what happened on 13/1. www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2013/01/07/best-places-to-photograph-london-undergrounds-heritage-steam-train-trips/

Went along to see it this evening, firstly at Earls Court, Baker Street, Euston Sq, Farringdon then at Great Portland St for the final westbound trip. Had a good time, plenty of people out seeing it, must have been almost 200 people at Earls Court at about 1920hrs.

I wonder if their is any mileage (or money) in this being a semi-regular thing - say on Sundays operating between Olympia and High Street Kensington? You could even use vintage tube trains for this service. When I visited the Wuppertal Schwebebahn in Germany ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuppertal_Schwebebahn ) they retain a vintage train which works regularly and in Berlin there is a S-bahn train with a clear roof so you can admire the city as you travel on a tour of the network, as well as other special/vintage units.

I doubt it. To travel on LU150 its £150 Standard Class and £180 First Class. Ive heard that New York City Subway do a similar thing. They bring out a restored Redbird during November - December season and they pop it on regular service .

I doubt it too - it was more wondering/thinking aloud rather than a serious question but it would be nice to ride 38 stock, 59/62 or an LT pannier between the 2. Just seemed there might be opportunity for a heritage service as happens on other systems and indeed operates on the buses.

Besides most running days are free which is a plus side.

Well that was a poor example as I suppose I could go to the Isle of Wight where it is an everyday occurrence!

M1199 Did you have a ride on the train? I am envious of your photos at Moorgate Great photos and vids aswell Some of my efforts, Firstly, at Earl's Court with the 19:15 Kensington Olympia - Moorgate, look how packed the station was! Secondly, at Baker Street with the 20:10 Moorgate - Edgware Road, again packed out. Probably my favourite video, very nice to see the train come to a halt here and power out on full steam And thirdly, at Great Portland St with the final westbound trip, the (delayed by problems on the SSL) 22:40 Moorgate to Earls Court at Great Portland St, felt sorry for the guys on the other platform as the C stock rushed in! I've also got some piccys up on my flickr site : www.flickr.com/photos/steve09photos/
