I got a solution. The death penalty. Bring it back. As I mentioned further up this thread, I'm not particularly sure a serious criminal even considers the consequences of their actions before they commit such a hideous act. The death penalty might serve well as a punishment (depending on your whole point of view on the matter), but I question whether it serves well as a deterrent, or as a solution. A lot of people either act impulsively and irrationally, or don't expect to get caught. I also don't think there's a correlation between the death penalty and rates of intentional homicide, so whether it's a solution in that respect is also questionable. As I said, harsh punishment, yes, solution to the problem of murder, no.

I got a solution. The death penalty. Bring it back. And how do you bring back those people who are killed by the state but who were, with the benefit of hindsight and subsequent investigation, actually innocent? There are far too many instances of the Police being utterly corrupt and doing "whatever it takes" to get convictions. The last year or so shows the Police to be in the pockets of parts of the media and utterly, utterly compromised in their ability to enforce the law. To think that Police officers, of that corrupt calibre, could end up putting people through the courts, convicted and then killed by the State is appalling. And don't think that the death penalty is much of a deterrence. Plenty of US states have it and there is plenty of crime including murder. Looking at the statistics the murder rate is higher in death penalty states than those who do not have it. Most murders are not rational acts and are committed by people who know the victim. Ditto for things like sexual abuse. To try to apply some of "overwhelming threat" as the logical deterrent will not work.
