If you read the article you will see that free travel for children and the unemployed is at risk.

If you read the article you will see that free travel for children and the unemployed is at risk. I understand. But free travel for kids needs to be limited and reinstate the child fare.

If you read the article you will see that free travel for children and the unemployed is at risk. And deliberately chosen to be as politically toxic and unpopular as possible because the Government would be blamed, not the Mayor. Whether it would raise the "right" amount of savings to deal with whatever scale of cut in grants materialises is a complete unknown. I have my doubts. We're talking about hundreds of millions (if the Standard's quoted 30% cut is used) which means projects and jobs get cut. BTDTGTTS many, many times in the past.

We need to be careful with the stats. Not passengers but passenger journeys. TfL hardly ever say anything about the number of bus pass jnys despite them having risen year on year since 2000. This press release is all part of a great big propaganda exercise to try to persuade the Government to give TfL loads of cash in the Spending Review which will be announced in late June. Unfortunately if you read the press release it drones on and on about investment which for the current Mayor really only means the NB4L and there are none in full service yet. If I was George Osborne I might ask a certain Mr B Johnson about what was causing the increase in bus passenger jnys given that none of his buses are in full service on a single route. The press release makes no sense and if I was the Chancellor I might well turn round and say "you're doing fine without this new bus so you don't need that £222m you're going to spend on it". Stick with your current policies for bus contracts and I'll use that £222m to fund some buses and trams elsewhere in England. The press release does mention improving the number of accessible bus stops which is fine. However it completely fails to mention the planned works to several TfL bus stations - presumably that doesn't count as investment??!?!

The Transport Committee met today to discuss Crossrail 2. At the end of the meeting they went through the remaining items on their agenda. This included confirming their work programme, including the bus investigation. They did confirm the programme but there were some very interesting comments from Assembly Members which suggest TfL is going to get a bit of a rough ride.
"We really need to shake TfL up" "It is ridiculous that bus routes still run the same route as they did when servants were travelling to their master's houses" "TfL take no notice of anything that is suggested to them by local councillors" "TfL have very fixed views. They really need to follow the example of Enfield Council who are doing a review of where buses should go, starting with a clean sheet of paper".
One of the loudest voices was Victoria Borwick who has led a vociferous campaign about removing buses from Oxford St and wants buses in the West End restructured.
Looks like some sparks might fly!

Now there's an idea! I have to agree that something needs to be done up there. My biggest complaint is the now over-bussed former bendy routes (25 and 38 I'm looking at you here!) which have far too much time. I seem to recall reading that the average speed of traffic in London is now 11MPH. Every time I get stuck behind a 25 it's going no more than 15MPH. And while I'm on this one; they could do with re-timing the lights in a few places. Northumberland Avenue springs to mind. The lights at the Trafalgar Square end spend 57 seconds (not a typo!) on red to then spend only 7 on green. Never seen that road without a queue of traffic

Think first have told drivers that the accelerator is for emergency use only as every first bus I see is going slow. The 38 well they reduced the pvr by 11 or so buses and it wasnt enough as buses still run empty wasting fuel and money.

I think this is the time for all enthusiasts to put their ideas through roll on the 12m Citaros because its more capacity then a double decker.
