Hi all With last years order for 92 Intercity Express trains from Hitachi for the Great Western Mainline and East Coast Line, another order has been confirmed this time for another 30 for the East Coast Mainline. They will be put into a Class 801 series. The 225s have done some sterling work over the years but there starting to show their age now. www.globalrailnews.com/2013/07/18/new-hitachi-trains-to-replace-intercity-225-fleet/

The sensible thing would be to buy some new electric locos or heavily refurb the Class 91s and put them on newly electrified bits of Transpennine or to put them on Cross Country workings where the extra carriages would be hugely appreciated. The last thing to do with them is to put them into a scrap yard. I fear the DfT has neither the wit or intelligence to make the best possible use of such an important fleet of trains.
