I'm on the 498's.
At brentwood we get a few freedom pass holders whose passes have been issued by essex county council, these passes allow the holder and escort/carer to travel free as well. Now, ive been telling the carer/escort that they have to pay, because TFL routes only allow the pass holder free travel.
Am I right?

AFAIK, a 'Freedom Pass' is a concession issued only by London Councils to London residents. Anything issued by Essex CC as a disabled concessionary pass would not be valid itself on TfL routes I think, as TfL are only duty bound to accept Elderly concession passes issued outside London, not disabled, unless perhaps it is part of the same nationwide scheme. I may be wrong, but I propose that the pass is invalid for holder and cater. But of course I await a reply from Swadbus as he will be more qualified to answer that.

Companion passes are not valid on TFL services for the companion - these are passes issued by local authorities that on provincial services are valid for carers. (eg, visually impared person with a carer) - they do allow travel for the disabled holder (as long as it displays the red rose symbol) but NOT the companion. Sometimes i understand they are issued as a "+1", others are issued on a separate carer/companion pass.
Disabled persons English concessionary (ENCTS) passes are valid on TFL services, but ONLY only the ones displaying the picture of the red rose are valid. Some are issued by local authorities that are similar in appearance but do not have the red rose on the front.
Also to clear up any confusion, Welsh, Northern Ireland and Scottish concessionary passes are not valid for travel on TFL services either.

I had one the other day that looked like a Student pass, but came up as a Freedom "E" pass on the reader, when I inspected it it had over 60's on the bottom...well I was confused by this but luckily I had a Revenue Official on-board who looked and confirmed it was genuine.

If im correct in saying those passes are what is issued when a person opts into the scheme Boris Johnson set up to keep the freedom pass starting age of 60, a bit you can only use it inside London.

Yes, As I've used it before (After explaining to the driver who hadn't seen one before that it was how a Essex Saver looks but I think he just accepted it because it had a First logo on it!) but they are not issued.

While on the subject on Essex Savers etc. I recently got a email from Surrey CC saying Explorer Tickets in the South East are valid all services they subsidise, but whats the view TfL take if for example the 465/411/166 which are all partly on behalf of both TfL and Surrey CC

The same applies to the TfL routes that go into the Loughton area.. i.e the 20, 167 and 397. They are accepted but not issued on these routes.

I spoke to a rpi today at queens, she said the companion/carer can travel free. Must admit, i'm with swadbus on this. If someone got on my bus with a essex saver ticket, i'd be inclined to refuse them. Have never been taught/told about them.

Companion / carers most definitely cannot travel for free with these passes on TFL services. Thanks for the feedback, I'll have a word in the right places and see if I can get this clarified to ensure the RPI's are giving the correct info to drivers.

No mention of being allowed on tfl routes. "tickets will be valid but not issued on Transport for London bus services starting or finishing in Essex"
