Now that the bendy buses are no more, the only time I ever see an RPI is on the 102 route - a surprisingly well-policed route considering the classy areas it passes through. Whatever happened to the "hit squads".

They are still about, get them alot between Camberwell and New Cross going through Peckham, TBH they are out at the wrong times of the day. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday night, after about 9pm and early Saturday and Sunday mornings before 7am is when you get the most chancers and many people who are far too gone from drink and or drugs to realise what they are doing, let alone to pay for a faye and get off at the right spot. Although drug users are easy to spot when they are wearing sun glasses when it is pitch black!!!

Had one on Friday while on the route 3. Haven't done the route in ages and then I get to kennington lane (towards oxford circus) around 8pm and two inspectors boarded. I was very surprised to see them. Fortunately, everyone had a valid ticket.
Around the last two months there were inspectors on almost a daily basis in the croydon area. They seem to have disappeared now

I get them regularly on the 89, in fact one day the other week I got one get on at Blackheath and off at the top of Shooters Hill and another got on at the bottom of Shooters Hill...I believe the 89 is a high priority revenue route at the moment hence why we are seeing them on a regular basis (although TBH they'd be better off targeting the 229 as thats where all the fare dodgers are at the moment)

At the risk of sounding thick, how do the fare dodgers do it? Is it through getting on through the rear doors or somehow tricking the driver into thinking they have a pass??

It varies from the getting on rear doors unseen, to the driver falling for a sob story to the pass being altered and then given a quick flash, for instance the other week when I was on the 486 I had a gentleman get on and show me a monthly bus pass with (what looked genuine) a date of 13 December....now being smarter than the average bear realised this was impossible so I called him back for a closer inspection and thats when I noticed the start date was October 2011 needless to say he walked

One jumped on my 243 last week... because of the DLA's door button flap it was too late for me to escape with my nephew's Zip card Just joking, I had a weekly travelcard... as a side point, TfL are looking to withdraw the weekly cards, according to a Yahoo group post Sent from my GT-I8190N using proboards

TfL will have a riot on their hands if they try to remove Travelcard. It is a protected product under the terms of the Travelcard Agreement and the legislation introduced to privatise the rail industry. Returning to RPIs - I was slightly surprised to encounter a plain clothes inspector complete with red polo shirt and dreadlocks on a 473 on Saturday.

Last time I saw an RPI was on the 105, at Heathrow Airport North/Cranford (after Harlington Corner), on a Sunday, 9am, where the bus was almost empty! It was whilst it was still very hot (late June), yet they were wearing jackets! I presumed they were to catch those who abused Heathrow Freeflow.

Last time we had one on route 50 was December last year (DW92 on a very busy peak morning working). Do they pick what routes/buses they board randomly (that's what it seems like to me)?

They're doing more plain clothes activities now, seems to work apparently... But you can ALWAYS spot them a mile off....or is it just because I "know" all the local ones
