Example of permitted entry 232 Hounslow-Southall-Yeading 232 Turnpike Lane Stn-Wood Green-Brent Cross (Two totally different routes)
Example of non-permitted entry 232 Hounslow-Norwood Green-Southall-Yeading (1968-74) 232 Hounslow-Convent Way Estate-Southall-Yeading (1979-93 renumbered withdrawn 232A)
The two variations of Route 73 (involving a simple diversion) are considered to be the same route Stoke Newington-King's Cross-Hyde Park Corner-Hammersmith (1949-88) Stoke Newington-King's Cross-Hyde Park Corner-Victoria (1988- )
How can I find an answer to my question?

I will do a bit of research, but 26, as said above by MrEdd, must be a potential candidate. 82 is another that comes to my mind, and there have been at least three different 269s.

Just look at the londonbuses.co.uk website. There is an entry for each variant of each route number. 156 and 198 look like they've had a few different versions.

The 208 use to run in east London, going through Bromley By Bow, not sure of its destinations and now a days it runs between Lewisham Station and Orpington.
Some of the 4** and 3** routes now a days could have been London Country/ London Transport Country area routes back in the day. If my memory serves me correctly 4** routes were south of the river and 3** north of the river. 7** being Greenline services and 6** being trolleybus routes, but they are school routes now and I very much doubt if any of them go close to their old trolleybus routings.

In the 70s the 95 used to be more or less what the 333 is now, except that I believe it ran up to Borough station then over Southwark Bridge to Cannon Street, it's now runs somewhere in the Shepherd's Bush area.
The 181 I believe used to be from Stockwell to Tooting Broadway, then via 57 to Streatham. That route I believe is now in the Catford area.
I remember the 115 running along Streatham Road, Mitcham, but in the 90s (Possibly from the late 80s) it ran differently, somewhat parallel to the G1, but serving Balham along the way. The 115 is now somewhere in East London.
The 70 (or 70A) used to be more or less what the 381 is now, the 70 now starting from south Kensington towards Action.
The 239 was introduced in the Clapham Junction area from 1989, now gone from there.
The majority of the 163 used to be the M1, so presumably the 163 was used elsewhere prior. Similar situation with the 156, which used to be a suffix variant of the 77.
I remember the 127 being introduced around 1982, shortly after the 200 was experimentally extended to Wallington.
I don't remember the 255 in the Streatham/North Mitcham areas during the 70s and 80s, presumably that was used elsewhere.
The present 60 was introduced around 1982, so presumably that was used elsewhere.
The present 264 never existed in the 70s, the route being 64 from Tooting Broadway to the Addington area (possibly new Addington).

It started off running from West Croydon to Roundshaw via Beddington ASDA but became a West Croydon to West Croydon circular via Beddington. Incidentally, there have been 6 255's. The 64 was extended from Addington to New Addington in 1987 and withdrawn between Tooting & West Croydon and diverted to terminate at Thornton Heath Pond. Between 1988 & 1990, the 64 was extended during Saturday shopping hours to Thornton Heath High Street.

It was used thrice: Clapham Common-Raynes Park (until 1951) Shepherd's Bush-Ladbroke Grove (until 1954) Romford Market-Canning Town (current)
