Amazing how this route has been enhanced through the years.
A 1983 timetable shows first bus from Heathrow Mon-Sat at 6am , Sundays at 0752.
From Kingston, it was 0741 MF , 0746 Sat and 0911 sun.
By 1994 , only really slight improvements , first buses at 0702 MF , 0745 Sat , 0800 Sun from Kingston , and 0607 MS and 0748 Sun from Heathrow.
It is of course now 24 hour service.
A journey that took 77 mins in 1983 , 85 mins in 1994 now takes up to 93 mins in 2013.
And of course the pvr , 9 in 1983 is now 24 ?
Quite impressive and perhaps shows how much the area is serves has changed over the years

Seems that a few people here *like* the route, and would want ADEs on it
I'm personally indifferent on opinions (not that I have any) but it's a useful link to Heathrow, for anyone really, and it does have good service. People just hate the SPs, that's all.

People just hate the SPs, that's all. Some people guessed what I think. Nice. It is my favourite route, yes. It's also a success story as it used to be run by Leyland Nationals (remember them? I don't - too young!) and ran to Kingston on Saturdays. It changed with the 110 between Cranford and Hounslow so many times since 111 was taken from London Airport (as it was known then), 111 almost had just a core Hampton-Hounslow route, which was barely anything, if at all. It also almost was cut again to be replaced by the 110 between Heathrow and Hounslow, but luckily, nothing happened (I think it was the tender 10 years ago that it was proposed). Going further back, it had RTs and ran to Heathrow "London Airport" Central, Chiswick and Hammersmith via Twickenham and 190, just goes to show how much changes over many years! 111 used to be quite a general suburban back street route with SMS/LSs, but it's now a trunk route which many people use each day. I remember when it wasn't a 24hr service, and there were many calls for it to get one (yes, I did do the consultation!). It takes longer now due to traffic, growing parked cars etc, but it's a useful link for local places and Heathrow Airport especially. It used to have alternate buses go to Heathrow and Cranford, making the Heathrow-Cranford service every 15mins. That thankfully has stopped and the whole "every 7-8min" service runs through to Heathrow Central Bus Station! It even used to have a nice route branding "oneeleven" with a picture of a 747 front on the VAs, "Flying to Heathrow, Hounslow and Kingston". It sorta also brings out other memories, but that's another story

AV never seemed to look after their buses very well. In the 1980's they had a motley collection of M's . For a long time their newest bus was a.solitary A reg M967. Their next newest bus after 967 was M616.
Some B reg buses came along for the opo conversion of the 37.
After NB closed and AV got half of the 281 , they did inherit a few C reg buses.

Apart from terrible rattles and squeaks, 56 reg aren't bad at all

I know people that do like them. Although they do also say that SPs do NOT suit the 111 In what way do they not suit the 111? Loads of bumps and speed humps - with harder suspension doesn't exactly work. That's what I'd think why it wouldn't suit it. And that SPs are usually terrible buses imo anyway (and it's my favourite route).

Exactly lol The 56 regs are just too low, but otherwise okay. The rest do have harder suspension! btw - back to the route, it has quite a good mix of things, with a fast section (Bath Road), a tunnel, some shopping areas and residential small roads all into one route! One of the reasons why it is my favourite route.

I used the 111 for the very first time today, end to end from Heathrow to Hounslow. What an awful route! The SP's are obviously horrible, it wasn't even that hot today but the buses were boiling inside, despite being able to hear the the loud whirr from the non-existing air cooling system. I fell asleep along between Cranford and Hampton, due to the endless twisting and turning along that section. Not to mention the severe overcrowding on the bus, the heat, the very boring residential roads, and the masses of not very pleasant kids (to put it nicely) that boarded somewhere before Hounslow. By the time I woke up just before Hampton Station, I was absolutely ready to get off the bus, and get on another route. I couldn't though, as I didn't know the area + my phone had ran out of battery (I rely on the Countdown app for everything regarding buses). So I stayed on board, hoping we'd quickly arrive at Kingston. I'd never been to Hampton before, what a lovely area! The river, the parks, the Palace... lovely! Then we encountered some killer traffic, where we were barely moving. At least this gave me time to admire Bushy Park and it's deer, and the stunning houses in the area. We crawled all the way to Kingston Bridge, only the driver then kicked us off here due to a last minute change of destination, telling us to get on the 111 in front...anyway, half of us got on this 111, the driver drove off in a hurry, leaving the other half of passengers stranded there! Before I knew it, we had arrived at Cromwell Road Bus Station... what relief! I then checked the time, the journey on the 111 lasted just under 3 hours, my longest bus journey in London ever! Never again! I really don't get the love for this route, it's just horrid, regardless of whether an ADE is on the route or not!
