Does anyone know why Stagecoach have decided, it would seem, to reduce the 372 Sunday service to single-deck operation? For about the past year, all Sunday 372 buses have been double-deck, utilising both E400 and Scania vehicles.
However, since Rainham garage started to test the 13-reg E200 vehicles bound for the 165, they have retained single-deck operation on Sunday ever since. It doesnt make any sense. Now they are operating the 165, most of the vehicles on the route are their allocated 09-reg E-200 vehicles.
It was a good idea to have double-deckers on a Sunday as the route only operates every 30-minutes and its a busy day for Lakeside Shopping Centre. Additionally, the 372 is going to full time double-deck operation next March anyway, so I can't understand this move at all.
Any ideas?

I read on a Yahoo group that the 372 may possibly be fully converted to double decker before March, to all the remaining Enviro 200s to transfer to TL for Route P4 replacing a few darts.

Maybe now RM has all the newly acquired routes there probably aren't enough spare DD buses to operate the route during the day on a Sunday hence why it's using its allocated buses .

As I remember, why can't Stagecoach use existing buses on the 372 upon a new contract? They should put a mid contract on some of the routes which RM operate then allocate the hybrids onto the route and use their buses on the 372. For example, mid contract on 174 to take the existing buses over to 372, then replace it with hybrids.

If they managed to do it before with a much smaller allocation then they should still be able to do it. All the new routes have their own buses so it's not as if they're using part of existing allocations. Given we are talking about Sundays every route will require fewer buses as frequencies are lower so there is no obvious reason why spare deckers could not be used on the 372. I thought TfL have basically part converted the 372 to double deck operation (2 buses?) anyway and surely it is easier on a Sunday to allocate the deckers TfL are presumably paying for? I'm sure there's a reason somewhere but on the face of it it seems a bit odd.

Fair point you make but they did have a lot more spare buses all the ex 106 Scania's , So it may have been easier but right as you say on a Sunday there should be more spares about . Maybe it's a case of until the new contract starts no DD'S will be out aside from the two scheduled buses , unless there is a problem with one of the E200s or if tfl specifically ask for them like at Christmas busy periods , from a company point of view unless its operationally easier it does seem odd to put DD's out on a contracted route in contrast to a commercial route if they only get paid to operate single deckers , more fuel usage etc .

I might be wrong but I thought that TfL had already varied the 372's contract so a couple of double deckers run in place of single decks. I am sure the LOTS route changes have shown this over the months. I'd expect those 2 deckers to run every day and especially on Sundays for exactly the point you make - lots of people going to Lakeside and only a 30 min frequency. Who wants to be left behind at a windswept stop in Wennington because the bus that turns up is too small?
