Route 428 Proposed changes to bus route 428 Overview The London bus network is kept under regular review. As part of this, we have developed proposals for changes to route 428 and would like to hear your views. Why We Are Consulting Route 428 runs between Bluewater and Erith, Bexley Road every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every 30 minutes during the evening and on Sundays. An additional schooldays only journey operates between Crayford and Erith for students at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy, Iron Mill Lane. As part of our service improvements we are proposing to move the afternoon school journey bus closer to the Academy to help students in catching their bus home. Proposals We propose to start the schoolday only afternoon journey at Barnes Cray Road. Pupils from Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy would then wait for the bus at a new pick up point on Barnes Cray Road. The bus would then depart along Barnes Cray Road, Iron Mill Lane, Maiden Lane and Mayplace Avenue. This routeing is required as the left turn from Iron Mill Lane into Thames Road is not permitted. No changes are proposed to the morning journey. Please see the map via link...

Wonder why the pick up is not outside the school, I know there was talk of using the school grounds at one point. Think a morning journey is also required.

I think its because there is a width restriction further down Iron Mill Lane, the main entrance to the school grounds is further down than shown on the map, there is therefore no way to turn around apart from the school grounds, however I do agree, why cant the school grounds be used??
on the 669 we board the afternoon journeys inside Cleeve Park Schools Southern Playground!!! So it can be done, but I suppose there is a reason why it cant be at present.
I know the roads round there aren't the widest (I have friends who live in maiden lane and Mayplace ave) so I suspect there may be a slight issue with parking, especially at school chuck out time!

I can only guess that certain schools are rather stingy about allowing buses onto their grounds. The 690 (and 689 before it's withdrawl) have always turned around using a roundabout on Burntwood Lane - though that could be why they don't use the school grounds at Burntwood School instead.
