First time on a London bus in 2021! (And probably since October of 2020...!). Since I’m only around for the bank holiday weekend, thought I’d make the most of having to crawl down from North-East to Catford for the day. Trying to avoid National Rail the whole way, here’s how it went!
275 [19797 LX11BHU] Woodford Station - Woodford Castle - this bus has issues. Ticking noise from engine while pulling away from stops in 1st gear, and the axle would bellow a loud screech (like that of a bike with squeaky brakes) every so often. Wonder if anyone local to the route / any T routes which use E400s have noticed this ..... otherwise, speedy enough 4 min journey.
W13 [1271 YX17NWM] Woodford Castle - St Albans Road - had to run an errand so hopped off here, just 3 stops after getting on. Slow journey but this bus has thrash potential. Could hear it, but never experienced it sadly during midday traffic.
179 [10182 SN63JWK] St Albans Road - Sth Woodford Stn - traffic all the way to George Lane. These SN63 have great engines and I miss them from when they used to be on the 275....
Central Line [014, rear car 91285] Sth Woodford - Stratford DLR Stratford - Canary Wharf (3x old set) DLR Canary Wharf - Lewisham (3x new set, 132-101-1XX)
185 [EH121 SN66WOM] Lewisham Stn - Catford - knew as soon as this bus pulled up we’d have an energetic journey. Not much traffic once through Lewisham Centre and onto the shopping high street. Bus lanes allowed for a quick journey.
Each bus / train had no more than a 2 minute wait. Pure luck, and I needed it as I was running late the whole afternoon..... Pottered about till 930pm.
47 [11304 SO68HDN] Catford - Lewisham Centre - first time on any 11xxx in South London. Good accel, but quite muted engines on these Smart Hybrids in London. Much prefer 2016 diesel E40Ds outside of London.
108 [MEC9 BG09JKF] Lewisham Centre - Nth Greenwich - with a 10min wait for a DLR, I decided to give it a couple mins for a Citaro to turn up before walking to the station. 15 seconds later, I saw it following a 181 up the high street. Empty 10pm Saturday night roads + Merc Citaro = an unrivalled journey on any single deck bus in London. Will be so very sad seeing these 09/59 plate Citaro go when they do, just like the 12 plate ones did.
Jubilee [356] to Stratford and then Central [037, rear car 91303] back home.
The return trip reminded me of just how much I miss nighttime bus rides through empty London streets. Night tube would permit some phenomenally long rides through NE, SE and SW London pre COVID with the guarantee of a speedy return home once you’ve had enough. Really looking forward to the next time these will become commonplace again. Some great buses out there still left to ride before they disappear once and for all.

Conveniently being in Coulsdon on Saturday morning, I decided to take a trip on the three Quality Line routes which are due to transfer to Go-Ahead in the coming weeks. This would be my last opportunity to have a ride on the 463 under Quality Line as it will pass to Metrobus this time next week. Here's what happened: 404 to Coulsdon Town Station (SDE20302). Having left the car in Old Coulsdon after meeting a friend earlier, it was rather convenient that this turned up within a minute of me getting to the bus stop . Pretty uneventful ride into Coulsdon otherwise. 463 to Wallington Station ( DE20093): The WS's on the 463 will stay with the route when it goes to Metrobus but DE's won't, so I was pleased to finally get a DE on the 463 on what will probably be my last ride on the route under Quality Line. Strangely, this one was also unrefurbished despite being allocated to the 419 on paper so still had the 2010 Transdev moquette. However, DE20093 was one sluggish bus alright - it was so slow up the hills at the Coulsdon end of the 463, particularly in the Woodmansterne Hail and Ride section. It struggled to get above 10mph up these hills. Also, as there were a lot of parked cars, it was very tight for the DE to get round the Hail and Ride section. Southern to Sutton (455826): Due to engineering work between London Victoria and Selhurst Jn/Streatham Hill, what would usually be the London Victoria to West Croydon via Crystal Palace service was amended to run between Streatham Hill and Sutton. Jumped on one of these to Sutton. Thameslink to South Merton (700045): First time I'd ever used the Wimbledon loop to get off somewhere that wasn't Wimbledon and coincidentally it was also my first time on a 700 between Sutton and Wimbledon having done this route regularly just before the Class 319's left. The Sutton loop services were amended too - because of an all line block between Cricklewood and Mill Hill Broadway, the Sutton loops were running to Kentish Town via Mitcham and trains via Wimbledon were terminating at Herne Hill. 413 to Sutton, St Nicholas Centre ( MCL30082) - Great to finally have a ride on one of the 413's Citaro K's having been meaning to for a while! The driver was throwing this around quite a bit. It's a bit of a shame that these aren't staying with the route but at least they do have another home to go to in September. S1 to Banstead, Marks and Spencer (OM20231): Considering there were quite a few DE's on the route, I was pleased to get a Metrocity for my S1 ride, although this Metrocity did sound a bit rough. I do hope C take better care of the Metrocities once they move over and I'm confident they will do! This one had been refurbished last year and is one of few Metrocities to have RATP moquette which will be short lived. 166 to Coulsdon Town Station (ENL109): Having thought I would miss ENX1 which was coming from Epsom, I was surprised to see it still in Banstead when I arrived. However, it had broken down there (which was a bit of a shame as I would have much rather had this over the voith E200's. A fitter arrived to sub the bus with ENL109, which in all honesty wasn't much better. But as we departed Banstead five minutes after the engineer arrived, he jumped on our bus to get back to TC having been unable to fix ENX1, leaving the bus on its own. I can only assume a tow truck had to be called for it. There was also a bit of confusion as to where the bus was meant to be going, as due to the delay to the trip, it was initially going to terminate at South Croydon Bus Garage, but another iBus call came in to ask the driver to terminate at Purley. Also, because the bus was going so slow, the bus behind (ENL110), caught up and passed us in Woodmansterne Village. I eventually made it back to Coulsdon having just missed the 404 back to where my car was parked, but luckily that wasn't the only way to get there. 60 to The Crossways (DW313). Nothing too eventful on this journey but these 10 reg DW's are starting to become a bit tatty. It's bizarre that Arriva didn't decide to refurbish these after the 13 reg T's, perhaps the plan is to replace these with the HV's off the 319? Drove home. Felt good to be back out on the buses for fun rather than for essential journeys for the first time in a while!

Good journey, I’ve always felt that South Merton Thameslink should have been renamed Merton Park when the old Croydon-Wimbledon line closed before Tramlink opened with that Merton Park stop on that line renamed Kingston Road. It weighs on my mind every morning and evening when I go through the station.

Yesterday I took a trip down to the south coast to try out Purbeck Breezers route 50 open top buses from Bournemouth to Swanage. For those that don't know the route was voted as the second most scenic bus route in the country after the 840 Coastliner from Leeds to Whitby. The route itself is fantastic with some great views of the coast but by far the best bit is going on the sandbanks ferry while still sitting on the bus, although using the train ferry which connects mainland Italy to Sicily would beat that I'm sure. The route is timetabled to take 90s mins and uses Evoseti Volvo with some being completely open top and some like the one I got on the way back having the front bit covered which I was thankful for as it started pouring down.
Train back got cancelled unfortunately, wasn't sure the reason at first but turned out this was due to a shopping trolley on the track. The 444 refurbishments are fantastic the seats are so comfortable and also the leg room is amazing compared to other trains in the UK. A very good trip out.

I've spent the last few days travelling across London. I think passenger levels appear very close to pre covid times.
I've enjoyed the refurbished VH's on the 28. Quite some variety on the route VH wise with all three types on the route most days. Seems to be running very well too. Haven't done the 328,seeing as though there isn't any real difference.
I travelled on LT179 up to Potters Bar on the 313. Lovely scenic ride. Caught a dismal Metroline DEL back on the 84. I wish Metroline would use double deckers 100% on that route and bring back a decent level of service on the 242 as well.
Double decks on the 481 are nice. Quite a scenic route as well. Kingston Bridge, Bushy Park, Kneller Hall, Rugby Stadium.
Worst trip award goes to a horribly packed journey on a 203 from Stanies to Hatton Cross. Awful passengers, slow bus, just horrid.

First time on a bus since 17 February 2020! (I made a few train trips on 9 October and 6 December 2020, and even on 6 December I was only taking the train due to having a bike puncture and being stranded in Kew!)
Anyway, took the U1 from Ruislip to Uxbridge at 7am this morning. Quite a lot of people on the bus, but nice enough before the school kids come on the bus. Bit busier on the way back at 8.30am though. Bit annoying that the bus driver was 2 minutes ahead of schedule by the time I got to Ickenham (towards Uxbridge), so he stopped at every stop for a while and was very slow. Nice scenery though, but most places in Zone 6 are like that.

I had an unexpected journey to Beijing yesterday from Ningbo so here’s my journey.
Home to Ningbo International Airport - Taxi 10 minutes, no bus available cost £1.50
Spring Airlines - (9c8682) to Zhengding Airport due to the price was £15 rather than fly to Beijing Directly £70!
Typical A320, a flying bus this is a low cost Ryanair saved a lot of money but not worth it, seats so small, when the plane was landing passengers were standing up, crew non existent, never again.
Quick change onto the free shuttle bus to Zhengding Airport Station then D2002 High Speed Train to Beijing West (11:29-12:52 £8)
Friend drove to my house.
In the afternoon Line 1 and Batong Line from Wanshlou to Tongzhou Beiyuan cost 60p, as per usual subway full but managed to get a seat for the whole journey.
Walked to Hampton by Hilton Hotel checked in and in the evening bus 583 from Wuzui University Road to Chaobei 8080 to my old house and to see friends for dinner, lift back to the hotel.
(Bus 583 silver BYD electric single decker, very fast no regulations cost 10p)
Today
Left the hotel and walked towards Tongzhou Beiguan Subway Station Line 6 then I saw my favorite bus route coming bus 89 to Miyun distance of 70km! So I had to jump on it.... King Long Single Decker only 24 padded seats, my God this bus was fast checking my phone and the bus was doing 110km at some points overtaking everything, this is my best route I have ever done from fast dual carriage ways to little villages, limited stop cost 40p and journey time 1hr 20 minutes, that’s how fast the bus was going!!!!!!
Reached Miyun and now on the borders of Beijing and don’t want to risk getting stranded so time to head back, the. I realize there is a train from the next town in Shunyi at 14:01 to Beijing Railway Station, so bus 970 from Miyun to Shunyi distance of around 30km, journey time 45 minutes some sort of green coach, quite fast cost 20p!
Reached Shunyi Railway Station and only one train a day to Beijing but due to the fact foreigners need to go to the ticket office to buy a ticket instead of the machines big que so had to push in to buy my tickets (locals buying for complex destinations) K1102 to Beijing Railway Station 1 hr journey time, not really comfortable because this is the cheapest train in China pulled by a engine but it got me out of trouble (cost 60p)
Line 2 and Line 1 to Wanshlou, Alipay bike Home, (reaches the cap on my card so free)
Just left as going for dinner, line 1 and batong Line to Tongzhou Beiyuan and will stay back at the Hilton after dinner.
Transport is really efficient here in Beijing but local train services you need to know the times if you miss the train it could be a day wait for the next one!
A wonderful little adventure

Last Day in Beijing before flying back to Ningbo tomorrow.
Woke up at Hampton by Hilton Wuzui University Road Walked 2 minutes to the corner bus 442 to Guangzhuang Bus Terminal short journey tri-axle Foton Bus, as per usual fast.
Bus BR2 bendy trolley bus with pantograph to Communication University of China, interesting with this bus is it’s like the jubilee line and it must be exactly in line to open up the doors (barriers) between each door, if a bus breaks down in front the bus can’t overtake because in its own bus guided lane.
Saw my old work colleagues around the corner, catch up for a chat.
Then walked to Batong Line, subway to Sihui interchange to line 1 then subway line 2 to Beijing Railway Station.
Noticed on the Batong Line that many trains will skip between stations, this line is hell and so busy so this is a good thing in my opinion!
Beijing South Railway Station T39 train to Tianjin this is a slow train but time I get to Beijing South Railway Station it’s not worth catching high speed train to Tianjin (cost £2, journey time 1hr 23 minutes)
Walked around Tianjin for a bit then shock all tickets from Tianjin Railway Station to Beijing Sold out
So..
Subway Line 3 to Tianjin South Railway Station and G168 train to Beijing South Railway Station
Then subway line 4 to Huangcun Subway Station, quick bit to eat in Saizeriya (Italian Restaurant) quite cheap £1.40 for a pizza and spaghetti bologonse walked to my friends house and rest
Tomorrow morning will try airport express from Beijing to Daxing Airport

I rode that route once in summer 2005 before construction of the high speed railway and other infrastructure associated with the 2008 Olympics. That train meal was the worst food I’ve ever tasted in Tianjin….rice with chicken in watery black bean. So bad, I still remember it! The rail fare and food was so cheap though, I couldn’t really complain.

Off course food is still served, the quality has got much much better, if you are not used to Chinese Food yes you can think it’s bad. The best thing on the slow train is that they have one carriage for sit in dining and it’s great! To order as long as you know a little Chinese it’s easy, yesterday on the slow train I bought from the attendant a Dongbei ice Cream for 20p, really good...

Saturday's journey to West & South West London - first one in a while: Walked to Brixton Underground Station Victoria Line to Oxford Circus - horrendously busy with every carriage rammed and all seats taken Central Line to Greenford - same thing though only for the first stop, after Bond Street, the train emptied significantly and by White City, there was only a handful on board. The E6 to Greenford Broadway (DE1123) - nothing interesting about this journey The E1 to Ealing Broadway (2446) - second time I've done this route, both under Abellio and both with the correctly allocated vehicle as well. The driver where possible certainly wasn't in a crawling mood which was good and we also passed ADH45037 doing route learning duties at Drayton Green. The E1 is a good example of where double deckers can go given there are some tightish turns on routes and some narrow spots as well. Patronage wise, it loaded quite well throughout with a decent crowd getting of at Haven Green The E9 to Yeading, Barnshill Estate (9464) - third time on this route having done a DE under Metroline and a 94** series under Abellio. Sadly, this journey was very sluggish and we were delayed near Argyle Road due to roadworks. Again, patronage was really good with it only emptying out just before Yeading - I then had the bus practically to myself the rest of the way with another E9 close behind that had no one on board. Walked to Kingshill Avenue The 90 to Hayes, Fairey Corner (VMH2584) - believe this is my first VMH ride on the route having previously rode a DP, MM & SEL. This was a quieter journey but the driver was certainly not messing about giving it a little bit of welly at times. I notice the build quality around where the panels join is better than earlier examples, good to see MCV continuing to improve it. The 350 to Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 (2459) - very happy to get a double decker and an ex QB example. Again like the E1 & 90 rides, very quick rides throughout especially as we got closer to Heathrow. Like the 90, this service is quieter but then I've experienced quiet journeys on the 350 a few times in the past The 423 to Hounslow Bus Station (VH45152) - this was on my list ever since it converted to double decks as it's so much better than the previously allocated DLE's. Again, no regulating or crawling and surprisingly, a few got in & around the airport, maybe even a tad more than along the route itself. There was a brief moment where one idiot driver lambasted the driver despite the bus driver having the right of way As we passed through Hounslow Heath, I spotted a SP on the 116 which got me thinking, is there anymore out and if yes, could I change my original routing I was doing and do that working instead - my luck was in as another 2 were out and one was 10 stops behind my 423 leaving me with only a short wait at Hounslow - result The 116 to Ashford Hospital (SP40187) - after a 8 minute wait, a 111 example turned up. The reason I wanted to do this because not only have I never rode a double deck 116 (my only previous journey was a DPS) but the 116 is expected to move out of AV and so the chances of a SP working are probably null once that happens so thought best chance is to do it now. It was a decent ride overall and was a little bit empty throughout. Thank goodness the heavens opened and shut whilst and before I got off at Ashford Hospital! The 216 to Kingston, Cromwell Road Bus Station (DLE30063) - first DLE ride having rode it a few times with DPS's. Driver made good time especially once through the traffic at Hampton Court where he thrashed it along Hampton Court Road Walked to Fairfield Bus Station The 57 to Streatham Hill, Telford Avenue (WSD16) - I thought I was getting an E but I get this instead, at least I can say I've rode one on their and hopefully I don't get another! The 59 to Brixton Hill, Blenheim Gardens (LT613) - nothing interesting about this journey Walked home

So guys I'm thinking of doing a journey from Peckham to Clapham Junction. I know the 345 and the 37 goes to both places. I would like to do both journeys to see which one would be quicker.
Anyone on here that has done this can you tell me which one you thought was quicker?
I slyly think the 37 will just about edge it but do tell me your thoughts.

Oh yes and also I would like to add the C11 and 143 to the list to go from Archway to Brent Cross. I know the 210 does that already but I would like to do something different.

In my experiences the 37 is certainly the one which takes longer while the 345 is faster, although I'm not sure whether that's been down to pure luck. I rode the 37 e2e the other day and wanted to amputate my legs by the end of it. Although if you are interested in seeing the sights of South London the 37 is certainly a good choice. The views of Clapham Common from the top deck are lovely alongside Dulwich, and then you pass across Brixton too.

I do like the Dulwich section of the route, especially when it gets to North Dulwich and that small section around Goose Green. One bus I would definitely recommend people to get on is the W3 especially around Alexandra Park. The viewpoint over there is beautiful especially in Spring and Summer.
