Any news on fares for 2014 yet? The Evening Standard has been given the details in advance (as usual). The detail has not been put on the Mayor's or TfL's site yet - grrrr Cash bus fare unchanged at £2.40 PAYG bus fare up to £1.45 PAYG daily cap unchanged at £4.40 Weekly bus pass up by 80p Tube CASH fares up 20p Most tube PAYG fares unchanged but Zone 1 and Zone 1 and 2 journeys up by 10p peak and off peak. One Day PAYG caps are frozen - both peak and off peak. Paper One Day Travelcards rise by 40p to 60p. Travelcard seasons rise by about 4.1% because of the effect of the National Rail fare increase. No details yet as to what happens to National Rail PAYG fares or through NR and Tube PAYG fares. Overall TfL fares rise by inflation only - 3.1% as a result of TfL efficiencies and increased commercial revenues.

Cash bus fare unchanged? Bugger. There was me hoping my life would get a good deal easier with a £2.50 fare!

www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/29040.aspxAbsolute disaster! I thought all the fares will be frozen! But they just raise the Oyster bus fare up by 5p! Arrrggghhhh! But anyway, at least the price caps are frozen! Thank god for that! Even through, i noticed that Dublin Bus already raised their fares and the cash fare users on Twitter moaned about fare rises and it ends up encouraging them to use Leap Card (their equivalent to our oyster card)!

Forgive me if I am wrong, but on another forum I read that the bus fare rises to £2.45 and the Zones 1-2 and Zones 1-4 Off Peak One Day TravelCards are withdrawn leaving only the Zones 1-6. This is effectively a fares rise for many people. Why does freebbc's post immediately above my own have the "This post is pending staff approval" message?

To be honest it was inevitable, just a matter of when.
Suppose I buy my Travelcard for January (in advance) before the fare rise - would I pay the new price?

AIUI you would pay the current price *provided* your new ticket starts before 2 Jan 2014. You will be charged the new price for any ticket starting on or after 2 Jan 2014.

You are incorrect about the bus cash fare - it stays at £2.40. You are correct that the range of paper One Day off peak travelcards is rationalised to only Z16 and Z19 versions. This increases one day travel costs substantially for those in zones 1 to 4 who do not wish to use Oyster Card daily capping. It is difficult to ascertain whether the pressure for this is coming from the TOCs or from TfL.

One thing that ive also noticed is that the daily capping for Z1-6 is now going to be less then a day travelcard, at the moment they are equal. I guess this could be the last change of the day travelcard, and could be fully withdrawn in 2015. Im happy that cash has been kept in way, would be an absolute pain on the 233s, as everyday ive taken nearly £30 in cash fares since i started, so i see TfL have seen some sense and not get rid of cash fares totally but a raise to £2.50 would have been nice for change purposes.

Err there is already a difference between paper one day travelcard prices and daily caps - it was reintroduced in the 2013 Fares Revision to reflect the low cost of providing the Oyster cap compared to selling paper tickets. Previously the price difference was because Oyster did not cover National Rail (there used to be a 50p difference in prices). We must await the consultation outcome on cashless buses. I would not read anything in to the announcement about 2014's fares having any bearing on what TfL will decide about going cashless. Remember that TfL have said going cashless saves £24m a year. This "fares freeze" (ahem) is predicated on TfL delivering even more efficiencies - such as cashless buses!

[ Michael Winner mode ] Calm down dear. [ Michael Winner mode ] Why anyone expected all the fares to be frozen I don't know. I expected them to go up by 4.1% which many of them are doing. The media coverage on this is pretty poor because people have not bothered to read the detail. What's worse is that some people seem to have been suckered by the headlines too. Given wages are not keeping up with inflation then those people who face an increase in their fares are worse off on two fronts (as is the case with many bills and costs). This package also shows that bus passengers really are the losers under this Mayoralty. Those in South London who cannot use the Tube, DLR or Overground are also lumbered with all round increases in National Rail PAYG fares and on through fares on to the tube in Zone 1.

This "fares freeze" (ahem) is predicated on TfL delivering even more efficiencies - such as cashless buses! I am surprised that the bus cash fare has stayed the same, I was fully expecting it to increase to £2.50 (rounder, easier figure and increasing the difference between cash and oyster) Slightly disappointed that the single fare has gone up yet again (but I can cope with 5p and at least the daily cap is frozen) With regards to cashless, I fully expect this to be given the go-ahead. However, I have done a few "back of a cigarette packet calculations. If there are 6million journeys a day and 1% pay cash, thats 60,000 people paying cash. Given that the fare is (currently) £1 more than oyster, thats £60,000 extra revenue a day x365 days = £21.9m additional revenue. Now, I appreciate it is less than 1% of people pay cash, I appreciate I havent taken into account weekends which are quieter so this figure will be a little less. However against £24m of savings, losing £21.9m revenue (thus saving £2.1m) dont seem like a lot to me. Then you also have to take into account the cost of the advertising and publicity campaign, getting oyster into more places etc, as well as the aggro that it may cause. I would have preferred to see the cash fare rise to maybe something like £3 to negate the cost of the revenue collection. Please someone tell me if I have my sums all wrong and am completely off beam and nutty!

I think its a matter of a International problem then a London problem. I seen tweets from the Dublin Bus commuters moaning that the fares have risen without any information being put out by Dublin Bus. But with a London problem, TFL is trying their best to upgrade the system to a level where the costs for running to be more balanced which is notably the New Bus for London. Yet they got to roll out the electric buses which is cheap to charge and to operate. But its really all getting complicated with the costs to keep things running, at least the GLA tried their best to keep the fares low as possible. But what else, should TFL start accepting bitcoins onto the Oyster card? But the price caps are frozen at least.
