Interesting I never knew the 40 used to go blackwall Only Monday to Fridays except evenings though. Was one of two routes where the nv's from london central got right into East London. The other being the D1.

I preferred the titans on the D1 on the early 90's instead. They was a much better then ride then getting on the small overcrowded DLR as it was in them days.

The 40 also went to Herne Hill until the early 90s when it was moved to Dulwich Library to relieve the 176 and 185 which continue to be very busy between Camberwell and Dulwich.
There's probably some scope for the 40 to replace the 363 between Lordship Lane/Wood Vale and Crystal Palace, but what would replace the 363, unless it was diverted from Underhill Road to Forest Hill, providing a direct link between Honor Oak and Forest Hill station.

In the morning peak, the 176/185 are so busy coming through East Dulwich that an empty 40 can be the only bus with capacity to take waiting passengers up until Denmark Hill Station (where all routes have a major empty) Without it passengers in East Dulwich would probably have to find another mode of transport, and if it came from Crystal Palace it could well be suffering the same loadings... I cannot see TfL doing anything to change the southern end.
