Does anyone think it would be a good idea with the ever changing of bus services , that route 40 should be extended beyond Aldgate to maybe Dalston ( creating new north south links ) or Stratford ( though that would be quite a lengthy extension ) as I think there is potential for the route and also new links ?

I don't really see what use that would bring. An extension to Dalston would be quite long, plus there's already the 67 that takes people there from Aldgate. Not to mention there's other modes of transport, such as the Overground.

TfL would be very reluctant to extend to Dalston given they've already reduced the 242 on the section that parallels the Overground. I can see some merit in running the 40 on to Old Street (for Moorfields Hospital) via the 67 and 135. This would give a relatively quick link to Shoreditch / Hoxton area as well as serving the hospital directly for a lot of South Londoners.

I have always thought that it could do with a southern extension beyond Dulwich to Crystal Palace or Anerley.

But there's already the 21, 35, and 47 routes which run from London Bridge that provide a link to Old Street and Shoreditch respectively. The 40 wouldn't really add on to much.

Not quite sure were the Eye hospital is, but I remember a number of years back when there was a proposal to extend the 344 to Islington via Old Street. This may be a better route to extend in that direction than the 40 as the 344 also serves Elephant and Castle.

This may be a better route to extend in that direction than the 40 as the 344 also serves Elephant and Castle. The eye hospital is just round the corner from Old St stn on City Road. I suggested the 40 as it takes a different route through the City to everything else and to give new links to / from the Brick Lane / Great Eastern St / Spitalfields area. If you want to travel the full length of Great Eastern St from Aldgate you have to change buses at Shoreditch which is daft IMO. I was also thinking of links from south of Elephant and Castle to the hospital. I appreciate loads of services stop at Shoreditch but it is NOT Old Street and if you have problems with your eyes you will value having a direct bus. The Old St area is also home to "Tech City" so extra transport capacity is not exactly going to be unused given growing levels of business activity and the Northern Line being saturated. Extending to Islington may be difficult as there is a distinct lack of stand space east of the Angel. You could turn a bus where the 274 terminates but it's not quite ideal for the station and the main set of shops and office buildings at the Angel.

what was the reason the 40 was cut back from Blackwall in the early 00s? I believe it might of been because of the opening of the jubilee line extension.

The 40 was cut back to Aldgate from Blackwall DLR Station in September 1999 - the same year the Jubilee Extension was finished.

The 40 has quite an interesting history, it went to Wanstead once. One little quirck years ago was the 40 running Sat/Sun and the 40A ran Mon-Fri. The 40 also once went to Norwood Junction on Sundays when the 196 only ran Mon-Sat.
