The purpose of this thread is to highlight Routes with lightly used sections, but provide valuable links which should be retained, the thread is not to state reasons against but reasons For. Just want hear views from people other than reasons to axe certain routes, should hopefully bring a healthy interesting topic area for some.
I'll start off with a two routes I know well.
Route 284: Grove Park Station - Grove Park Cemetery - Does a small loop in the Grove Park area serving Baring Road, Coopers Lane & Marvels Lane, but links the Main parts of Grove Park with the Cemetery as well as passing Hither Green Cemetery on Verdant Lane very useful for commuters on Mother's Day as people go to visit loved ones at both Cemeteries. Provides Coopers Lane & Marvels Lane with a frequent service to Catford & Lewisham even though the 261 is quicker, but is quite useful for the elderly or disabled passenger who may not wish to Walk up to Grove Park Station for a 136 or 261.
Route 261: Bromley South - PRH - Provides the only direct link into the grounds of PRH and is used a lot by the lessabled passenger even though the 358 passes the Hospital, the 261 is more preferred as the terminus is inside the grounds so provides more support for the less abled.

Route 199: Pepys Estate to Surrey Quays Station - This link is well used by students and older people during peak hours and daytimes but is lightly used at night. The 199 at night just tends to zoom through there sometimes without taking or dropping off anyone. The bus stops located there which most have demand for the 199 is the Riverside Youth Club and Windlass Place bus stops as most people take the bus and also drop off from there.
Route N1: Pepys Estate to Corbetts Lane, South Bermondsey - This section of the N1 tends to be lightly used aswell especially Pepys Estate. However, the N1 does carry a fair amount of passengers but only a tiny amount tend to drop off there.

171 - Catford Town Centre to Bellingham. I assume this just makes it easier to park buses, as the Catford Gyratory can suffer from heavy traffic, making it harder to turn. That, and there's no proper stand space (apart from Catford Station)

The W11 and W15, which are diverted away from Palmerston Road, both provide very handy and convenient round the corner links. Clearly both routes had decent patronage when they ran via Palmerston Rd but they now offer new links "round the corner" at Bell Corner and Blackhorse Rd stations that people seem to value.
The loadings originating on the "new" sections aren't massively high but are decent enough and I think TfL will have a problem withdrawing them whenever Palmerston Road reopens for buses (when Network Rail removes the bridge weight restriction).

57 - Streatham Hill Telford Avenue to Clapham Park - provides a link between Clapham Park & the main shopping area in Streatham at Becmead Avenue Don't forget the 50! If there was space for the 57 at Telford Avenue or Streatham Hill Station, it'd be cut back to one of those terminus's in a jiffy!

But heading towards Holborn it is quite popular!

The 492 is the ultimate route of lightly used but important sections.

The 492 is the ultimate route of lightly used but important sections. i agree it is important, the 492 gets stick because it has double decks when for most of time it don't need them, Bet the 492 carries more passengers than most R routes around the Petts Wood area.

I know what I'd do with the 57, I'd controversially extend it to Brixton.

The 474 isn't very busy at all for most of the day, but it provides the only bus link to Silvertown and City Airport for much of its route.
