Some of you may not be aware, UNITE are pushing for an equal rate of pay for all london bus drivers and there is talk of a 3 day strike to get the talks started.
Now, ive heard this from day 1 of driving a bus, but UNITE have put up a poster.
My thoughts;
The problem with privatisation is divide and rule. Which is what has happened.
New drivers, every year get a lower start rate and no enharncements-late rate, attendence bonus and low overtime rates.
And yet certain operators make more and more profit every year, and the fares go up for passengers, and yet the wages for new drivers goes down-that cannot be fair, surely.
As london bus drivers we all do exactly the same job, we drive the same buses on the same routes and yet there can be 20 different contracts/pay rates at 1 garage!
Surely we should all be on the same rate. which leads to how much should that rate be?
My thoughts are;
6am-6pm mon-sat = £13 per hour.
6pm-6am mon-sat = this is a difficult one, maybe £18 per hour?
6am-6pm sun and bank holidays - £15 per hour.
6pm-6am sun and bank holidays - £20 per hour.
Some of those rates do seem high, but we have sadly become used to getting the same rate at weekends and nights.
Surely getting the same pay at 12 midday and 12 midnight cannot be fair?
Like wise, the rates of a weekend, I currentley get about a pound an hour more for weekends, not fair IMO.
When you consider buses carry more passengers than the tube everyday, buses always run- no 'leaves on the line' excuse for buses. When the tube/DLR/trains go down, its always the buses that pick up the pieces.
Your views please.
