TfL have released info about the proposed rebuild of West Croydon Bus Station. I have tried for weeks to find details of the planning application but there were no drawings on the Croydon Council website. I think I can see why! Press releaseMock up drawingsI've seen some drivel in my time but who on earth thinks that new design fits in with West Croydon. The current bus station may not be wonderful but you can at least escape from the wind and rain. That new design is awful.

The current bus station is fine in my opinion. The mock up of the new bus station is not that impressive at all. I hope they make improvements to the plan. However, I am very excited for the future of my local town especially with Westfield coming in 2018. Croydon really does need a facelift. I'm kind of dreading it if this is the final design. I hate to tell you that that design is the one that has been approved by Croydon Council. I could readily see that design working in somewhere like Harrogate or Chester, where there are old and preserved buildings, where new ones have to fit in sympathetically. Quite how it sits in with the plans to redevelop Central Croydon one can only speculate. I doubt Westfield are going to make the Whitgift look like a Victorian Market Building! The bizarre thing is that no plans are included on the planning application website so no one could object to the proposal as there was no information. It also seems the approval was delegated so it never went in front of elected Croydon Councillors. I've been through several sets of minutes for March and April this year and there is no sign of this application. I find that all rather bizarre.

All I will say is, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" Some of the sliding doors at the station are broke...

Doesn't surprise me that Croydon Council approved this monstrosity - anyone seen the hideous new buildings that have gone up in Croydon recently such as the Saffron Square development - building design today is a serious afterthought in my view. The current bus station isn't great looking but it's sure as hell better then that thing plus, as others mentioned, your sheltered from the elements. Will there be increased capacity at the rebuilt bus station? It would be nice if northbound 50's & 468's could serve the bus station rather than stop on Wellesley Road.

According to the press release then the new bus station apparently does have more capacity plus room for growth. My guess is that the parking area will be expanded with the land take for the actual stands / buildings being much reduced. Apparently there will be an enquiry place and a shop but in the absence of a detailed drawing it's really hard to know.

It looks like it be better for somewhere in a rural area or countryside. I know Croydon has a bit of a reputation but surely they can do better than this But as a driver then its about time that they are deciding to redo West Croydon Bus Station. When I do the T33 it can take me over 5 minutes to get from the stand to the bus stop due to the traffic heading out towards London Road and Reeves Corner, although the oncoming trams playing with the traffic signals are the real cause of the problems there. Then after serving the stop, we have to go over some dodgy speed hump. This speed hump is possibly the worst hump I ever had to drive across (The speed hump in St George Grove for the G1 is the only other comparable one to this hump). Its so uncomfortable and I wonder how the passengers stay in their seats as I when I have a quick glance at the interior mirror while going over the hump, it looks like they are on a rollercoaster as you can see them swaying vigorously from side to side. Also, the bus stops for buses heading towards Whitehorse Road (75/157/410/450/X68). The pavement is too small for the large crowd of people there. And when two buses are parked at that particular stop then its very difficult for any bus to get through due to the silly railings which are situated there between the buses serving those stops and the bus stand itself. The new design does look better for the drivers parking their buses though, and I guess the building on top is where the drivers can relax. I suppose the only bad thing is for the passengers in that there be nowhere to hide from the cold or windy weather. I guess this also means that the passengers will no longer be able to hear the opera music when the new station is built although personally that is a good thing

Yesterday i was waiting for a 405 to move off its stop so i could get to mine, i didnt like the look of that yellow railing so i waited in the end i couldnt wait no more and did manage to get through. Another issue well the 75 stop is if there is another bus on it there are stupid blue railings which prevent you from picking up passengers you have to wait for the one in front to move. That new bus station looks cramped for passengers how will they all stand there and get past each other.

I can still remember the old bus station before half of it was buried under an office block back in the 80's.
What we've got now isn't great but this is just ridiculous, but nothing should suprise me about Croydon Council.

Just to think this whole area would have been re-developed anyway in the 1960s should the plans for the missing northern bit of the Croydon Inner Ring Road had ever come to fruition, in these plans the current bus station would not have existed, instead given over to the ring road, with a new bus station in the middle of the roundabout junction formed by Wellesey Road and the northern Inner Ring Road. It seems silly only three sides of the Ring Road were ever built! www.cbrd.co.uk/indepth/croydonringroad/history.shtml

I guess its situated there to stop passengers from missing the step as the kerb goes in an angle at that point. When there's another bus in front (especially the 410 as they do their live changeover at that stop) then I just stop just before the blue railings and pick up passengers there. Of course, I be blocking the bus stop behind (the stop for routes 166/405/407/455/T33) and stopping buses from serving their stop correctly.
