TfL has launched a further round of consultation on the proposed route for CR2. The basic changes are - a possible extension to New Southgate thereby placing the new Ally Pally stop underground. - south western service seemingly extended to Twickenham instead of Shepperton - debate about how to serve Chelsea / Kings Road. - debate about how to run through Hackney - via Dalston Junction or via Hackney Central but not both. Consultation LinkI remain deeply unimpressed.

Dalston is a good interchange so support that especially if dropping the Hackney alternative saves 1bn. Can't see the expensive meander via Chelsea as good, it benefits relatively few, slows everyone elses journey and costs extra 1bn, skip that station. Apart from that I wish they would piggyback off the skills of the Crossrail 1 teams so they could design and build in about 8 years rather than nearer 15-19 years the current dithering idea is suggesting

Hope they keep the Dalston Junction interchange as this will open up even more of London to ELL passengers and gives more of a purpose to the current ELL station which can seem a bit grand for not many passengers.
However, Hackney could do with a decent rail service which would take pressure off the 38.

The 38's patronage has been decreasing over the last years according to some figures revealed on the forum - think it was by 'snoggle' but not 100% sure. It was me that quoted the numbers. NCT remarked that cycling has grown a lot on the 38's corridor and that's a very fair comment. You can only really scale back the 38 (and 73 / 476) if you do something about extra stops on CR2. The whole thing is unbalanced - the growth in housing and transport is in Zones 1 and 2 but CR2 spends its life zooming through Zone 2 north of the river not stopping. It needs extra stops at Essex Road, Stoke Newington and West Green (on the New Southgate branch). This daft idea that it is a regional scheme means they've got to make it run fast somewhere to give the journey time reductions but they're doing that by not stopping in areas with vast demand. I think Hackney Council have been placed in a difficult position by the forced choice of Dalston or Hackney Central but not both.

An update has now been issued. The preferred route now goes via Kings Road Chelsea (Clapham-Victoria section), and via Dalston in the North. The New Southgate extension is also included. The regional version (not the metro version) is also chosen version.
Meanwhile, a number of construction websites are reporting that contractors (civil engineering) for detailed design are being quietly sounded out already.

It is also worth noting that there are no intermediate stations between Dalston and Seven Sisters / T Hale and that there is an option for a spur from Angel to Hackney Central and possibly running further east from there. It's still a disastrous mess and yet all the politicians are saying it's wonderful.

The Dft are now consulting on the updated safeguarding provisions for the amended Crossrail 2 routes. www.gov.uk/government/consultations/crossrail-2-safeguarding-directionsOver 60 pages of maps showing the underground route alignment and potential worksites or station locations. Victoria Coach Station, Falcon Rd Bus Stand at C Junc, Tooting Market and Clapton Bus Garage are identified as being potential surface locations of interest. Looks like the extra entrances at Tottenham Court Rd CR2 station would be on Shafestsbury Avenue (south entrance) and Rathbone Place (north entrance) on Oxford St. The alignment runs N-S at this point.
