It seems, based on Twitter, that TfL have announced that contactless bank cards will be accepted on the Tube, DLR and London Overground services from 16 September 2014. There will also be daily and weekly (Monday to Sunday) capping but only for TfL rail services! From what I can tell, as the press release isn't on the TfL website yet, buses and National Rail services will not be in the capping facility from September. Therefore you'll be capped for your TfL rail travel at the Travelcard price but your bus and NR travel won't be - if I'm understanding things properly. Tramlink is not mentioned. EDIT - TfL have issued a press release which clarifies some of the above. My reading of it is that buses and trams are included in the scheme come 16 September but not NR services. TfL press release

it's all part of the same launch even though EE have tried to make a separate thing. The TfL press release has a small reference to the fact that NFC equipped phones with the right application will also be able to communicate with TfL readers. Of course we haven't yet got the messages saying "to avoid phone clash don't keep your phone with your bank cards and Oyster cards". With the move to industry standard comms it will be possible to have the bank card functionality on a wand or on a tiny keyring. In Hong Kong there are all sorts of such products for use on their Octopus Card.
