In the latest TLB there is a report that hail and ride sections have been replaced by fixed stops on routes 434 and W10. Having looked on the TfL countdown pages for these services there are conventional stop names for a few stops and then lots of extra stops added in but with "hail and ride" in the title. Does anyone know what has happened on the ground? Are there actual bus stops on what were former Hail and Ride sections or are there timetable frames on lamp posts (as exist on several hail and ride sections on other routes like the 192 and 226) which guide people where to wait for a bus and let them know a bus runs on that road? Do buses now only stop at stops / timetable frames or do they still hail and ride? I've only ridden the W10 and then it was years ago but I really can't see TfL wanting to install a load of stop poles for a bus route that barely makes 30 journeys a week. Any info much appreciated - I believe we have a resident route 434 fan on the group now. Thats me who's the 434 fan!! Ive done the whole Hail and Ride section of it. It needs fixed stops, rather than people stopping the bus everywhere. Some examples of where they should put them is outside Kenley Station (yes there is a timetable frame on the lamp post there), Oaks Road, Northwood Avenue, and Higher Drive (where i also found a Timetable frame on a lamppost) I don't know what the road is where the 434 goes down near Woodcote, ill look next time i go. The PVR for Route 434 is 3 buses i don't know how many journeys these three buses make per week, One every half an hour, on some days you find the 4th bus on the 367 or T32. On the map of the 434, it includes the following stops i have mentioned, but there are no bus stop poles, just timetable frames last time i went. As far as I'm aware its still Hail and ride, but looking at LVF just now, 189 (YY13VKO) was at "Hail and Ride Foxley Hill Road" and 191 (YY13VKR) was at Hail and Ride Copse Hill. Thats something ill be looking into when i next go on the route. There was an article in the Croydon Advertiser a few years ago about a bus stop being placed outside the doctors surgery in Kenley, but it wasn't a popular decision as it meant losing parking spaces. I doubt that bus stops would be placed in Kenley due to this reason, and some of the roads are quite narrow. 272 is a route where the Hail & Ride section is not even shown on iBus, but it's well known anyway. After 'Bromyard Avenue' (Acton Vale), the iBus goes immediately to the next fixed stop "Abinger Road" (Turnham Green), not noting that there is the hail & ride section midway through (and vice versa in the opposite direction). Throughout the hail & ride section (Emlyn/Larden Roads), the iBus displays the next fixed stop. This has been the case since the start of the iBus on the 272, and I don't know why...?
I always find it odd when a double decker route has a hail & ride section, because of the connotation that hail & ride = single decker (usually small) buses! The C3 will have/has fixed stops on Lots Road, so the only double decker hail & ride routes left are 230(?) and U3 (few journeys).

After Purley it used to just display the next fixed stop being "Whyteleafe Station"

Cars parked on the opposite side of the road are a nuisance to the buses. Where the timetable frame is on the Coulsdon-bound direction at Kenley Station is a perfect place to place the bus stop poles. On the opposite side, they should put it either opposite the station or towards the start of the road where the bridge is. My other thoughts for improving the 434 are : The 434 should get a 4th bus (Which would be running number 294) in my opinion. i wish they were every 15 minutes, when i go down to Coulsdon and i miss a bus, i have to wait half an hour. The 434 could also benefit from an extension to Caterham Station to gain more passengers when the trains aren't working.

There is no way the route could justify a 15 min service. As for the Caterham section the 407 already had your point covered?

Slightly off topic- BUT happy 11th birthday to Route 434!! With 2 operators, one extension, no frequency changes and a 231% increase in patronage in that time (albeit patronage numbers are fairly low for London - nearly 1/4 million pax jnys per annum now).

If you miss a bus in Coulsdon you could try racing it to Purley on another bus, I have tried that before and caught it

I was on 190 this morning on the 434, Instead of saying Hail and Ride Section starts here, and Hail and Ride Section. It now says, "Hail and Ride Kenley Station" for example and when someone gets off the bus, the iBus resets and says 434 to Whyteleafe South. I think these improvements are MUCH better. Unfortunately, there are no fixed bus stops

"The posts also encourage passengers to congregate"
Ha , so they are actually a bus stop just without a flag because the well to do residents don't want it obvious that their road is a bus route !
