In the latest TLB there is a report that hail and ride sections have been replaced by fixed stops on routes 434 and W10. Having looked on the TfL countdown pages for these services there are conventional stop names for a few stops and then lots of extra stops added in but with "hail and ride" in the title.
Does anyone know what has happened on the ground? Are there actual bus stops on what were former Hail and Ride sections or are there timetable frames on lamp posts (as exist on several hail and ride sections on other routes like the 192 and 226) which guide people where to wait for a bus and let them know a bus runs on that road? Do buses now only stop at stops / timetable frames or do they still hail and ride?
I've only ridden the W10 and then it was years ago but I really can't see TfL wanting to install a load of stop poles for a bus route that barely makes 30 journeys a week.
Any info much appreciated - I believe we have a resident route 434 fan on the group now.

Instead of having the "Hail and ride section ends here" announcements they now have Announcments such as "Hail an Ride Northwood Avenue". I imagine they have been implemented to give the passenger more infomation. Regardless, the usual H&R system is in use. The 434 has not got any fixed bus stops or new frames but has kept its existing frames. On the same note, no frames have been introduced catering the new announcement locations. I hope this helps. |

315 also has stops/lampposts with timetable thingies and on iBus/Live Bus Arrivals/LVF say the H&R alongwith the name.
Eg: "Hail and Ride Sunnyhill Primary School" < was created around this year, otherwise was "Hail and Ride Valley Road" as the whole road.

Thanks for the feedback - it confirms what I suspected might be the case in that it is an I-Bus / Countdown tweak to make the info more meaningful rather than a mass invasion of stops.
I wonder if it will spread to other Hail and Ride services so there is a more granular level of info on the Hail and Ride bits? I shall have to watch out for changes to the W11.

Actually I suspect that if TfL and the Council came along to try to formalise the stop positions in Priory Court that none of the stops would be where buses currently stop. This is because the pavements are too narrow for shelters, stops would be too close to junctions, parking spaces would be lost etc. Even the stops by the Library where the pavements are wide are close to junctions and a pedestrian crossing and would probably fall foul of some rule or another. The council would probably refuse to dig up the grass verges and put down paving for those stops on Millfield Avenue and would want TfL to pay for the work too. I'm not convinced stops are needed but providing a couple of timetable panels on lamp posts near to where buses stop would at least tell people what time buses are due. |

The Valley Road to Gleneldon Road/Stanthorpe Road section has always had them but the York Hill to Canterbury Grove section has never had any which I find strange. Having been along those streets at the weekend I did not see any, though was not specifically looking. |

Unless York Hill's entrance (next to the tiny playground and estates/flats where the bus normally stands towards Balham) has it. And iBus (also Live Bus Arrival/LVF) state "Hail and Ride York Hill" or "...Canterbury Grove". I think some lampposts have timetables on it. But other than that, no. |

It needs fixed stops, rather than people stopping the bus everywhere. Some examples of where they should put them is outside Kenley Station (yes there is a timetable frame on the lamp post there), Oaks Road, Northwood Avenue, and Higher Drive (where i also found a Timetable frame on a lamppost) I don't know what the road is where the 434 goes down near Woodcote, ill look next time i go. The PVR for Route 434 is 3 buses i don't know how many journeys these three buses make per week, One every half an hour, on some days you find the 4th bus on the 367 or T32. On the map of the 434, it includes the following stops i have mentioned, but there are no bus stop poles, just timetable frames last time i went. As far as I'm aware its still Hail and ride, but looking at LVF just now, 189 (YY13VKO) was at "Hail and Ride Foxley Hill Road" and 191 (YY13VKR) was at Hail and Ride Copse Hill. Thats something ill be looking into when i next go on the route. |

I very keen to see what happens with the Hail& Ride Routes, so I'm watching the 85/86 routes to see if this a catching trend.
I'm a fan of Hail & Ride (having previously lived on two Hail & Ride Routes) however in my opinion on some routes Hail & Ride is pointless as the bus generally stops in a specific or fixed location and rarely stops outside of those locations. Although I do understand that parking restrictions and Borough disputes can be the problem.

I did notice that the announcements on one of them was really loud the other day. I didn't take note of the bonnet number, but it was probably was 190. It wasn't like that when it was new though, so someone must have fiddled with the volume. |
