Govia and the DfT have agreed a near 4 year extension to the South Eastern franchise. South Eastern press releaseKey points - a rejig of the High Speed services with new services added - a Hastings "Business Express" service in the peaks - possible move of Datford and Swanley into the Travelcard area - use of Oyster on HS1 between KX and Stratford. - rolling stock and station "brush ups" - more ticket gates and ticket machines - staff to be given tablets to improve customer info - some blurb about "new" train services which are really a consequence of the Thameslink works at London Bridge and not some fantastic innovation by South Eastern!

"use of Oyster on HS1 between KX and Stratford."
Hopefully this means a cheaper fare I'd of thought?

Oyster on HS1 seems like an attempt to relieve AGA & the Central Line. Will Stratford International also move to Z2-3 like Regional??
I assume there's nothing about metro frequencies being boosted? (Or is that for the next franchise?)

"use of Oyster on HS1 between KX and Stratford." Hopefully this means a cheaper fare I'd of thought? I doubt it. I suspect it simply means you can pay the normal cash fare with the balance on your Oyster PAYG. I would also not be surprised if the fare was held separate from all others so you won't have a through fare from say Z6 to St Pancras via High Speed. You'd pay Z3-6 and then for the High Speed journey separately. I'm assuming that because of the ponderous wording used in the press release about using the balance on Oyster PAYG cards for travel rather than saying "we'll accept PAYG but you'll be charged a higher price for using HS1".

(Or is that for the next franchise?) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I believe the rezoning proposal covers Stratford Regional, Stratford International and Stratford High Street stations. AFAIK zoning has no effect on HS1 fares because it is separately priced and not on the zonal farescale. HS1 fares have to include the premium charge for use of HS1 tracks. There are no real frequency increases in this direct award because the train fleet will be stretched to breaking point coping with the next 3-4 years of work at London Bridge. Fewer trains will run but those that do run will have to be longer and will run to different service patterns as the works progress at London Bridge. Most of the service changes that South Eastern are taking credit for in this franchise are a direct consequence of coping with the Thameslink works. One example is Dartford - Victoria which will run daily and for longer hours because they have to send the trains somewhere as they won't be able to squash them through London Bridge. That's already published in the advance timetables for Jan 2015. I expect that link will be very popular but no guarantees that it will still exist in the next franchise! South Eastern have an awful lot of change to cope with over the next few years and you can understand why DfT were not keen to see a change of franchisee in the midst of big works. It would also have struggled to get a good deal for a risk bearing franchise - this is why TSGN is a gross cost, management contract for that franchise. I don't expect the post Thameslink scenario for South Eastern to be wonderful because the service patterns on inner area services will be more rigid than now (e.g. Greenwich line into Cannon St). There have been suggestions that there will be fewer peak trains post 2018 but clearly we must see what transpires then. Hopefully TfL will be given the inner area services to run and we can get rid of the "do minimum" feel that the current South Eastern franchise has. Hopefully we can also apply some persuasion to crazy Tory MPs and Councillors who think a TfL run by Boris Johnson is some sort of Communist Plot to wreck their train services.

I really don't see any point in allowing local travel between St Pancras and Stratford on HS1.
Moving Swanley and Dartford into the Travelcard zone makes sense.
Not much point in putting in new ticket gates if they can't be bothered to staff the existing ones.
Are the tablets to be taken twice daily?

I think there has been an ongoing campaign to get Oyster on HS1 probably in the expectation that fares would be reduced. Dream on baby. There will be more gateline staffed hired to ensure gates are kept working for longer hours.

Does this mean that finally Brixton Station will actually resemble a decent station and not a prison like, worn out building?

As this point relates to SouthEastern, I thought I would mention it here. I have not checked all Bank Holiday weekends, but on the Spring Bank Holiday, the line through London Bridge to Cannon Street and Charing Cross will be closed. This will lead to an increase in journeys from Victoria to Lewisham, including the Hayes service. Also, there will be the rare treat of journeys from Dartford via Woolwich Arsenal and Lewisham to Blackfriars! Some details are available here www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/currentAndFuture.aspx
