Felt like creating a discussion about the strangest diversions buses have took over the years. Can name a couple in East London. I believe one time the 8/388/D3 were diverted down Old Bethnal Road in 2010. And while on the same area, I remember being on a 309 back in the early 2000s being diverted from Globe Road via Cephas Street to Cambridge Heath Road. Both are not served by any bus routes

In the early & mid 90's when Brixton Hill would close, buses would use Brixton Water Lane & St. Matthews Road rather than Effra Road. Was a strange sight seeing RM's on the 159 going down St. Matthews Road.
Another one was when Elder Road closed in the early 00's, the 2 diverted via Rothschild Street towards Marylebone and Church Road towards Crystal Palace, Knights Hill & Crown Dale. I loved this diversion as the elderly L's had a good crack at the steep Knights Hill & Crown Dale.

When the junction of Widmore Road and East Street in Bromley was closed, buses were diverted via South Street, it was only slightly tight in a Omnicity SD but the worse bit was where a car would park right on the end of East Street and West Street, so buses couldnt turn.....this happened on more then one occasion.

I remember on a couple of occasions when the 176, 185 and 197 were diverted along the 363 route from Lordship Lane/Wood Vale stop to Goose Green/Peckham Rye when Lordship Lane was closed due to a road accident. All those deckers getting stuck along Underhill Road.
A more logical diversion would have beeen Dulwich Common, College Road, Dulwich Village and East Dulwich Grove to Goose Green.

Or divert it further along the 363 route towards Peckham Rye with the 176 and 185 returning to line of route at Goose Green (via East Dulwich Road).

I was on an X26 diverted between New Malden and Heathrow Airport via the A3 and M25!!!....it was fun though.
Also recently the 228 was diverted between Maida Hill and Ladbroke Grove via Queen's Park, and the 28 was diverted between Westbourne Park and Chamberlayne Road via Kensal Road. It would've made more sense if it was the other way around.

The 85 had a diversion last week (from 1000-0600). The route essentially took the 57 route from Kingston to Wimbledon, then after that I think it may have followed the 93 to the A3 where it would turn onto Roehampton Lane go the normal routing. It's either that, or it took the 93 from Wimbledon straight to Putney, which I doubt. LONG winded diversion though!

A few months ago the 25s, 86s and 147s were diverted through to Barking, East Ham then up via Green St to rejoin normal route due to a fire on Romford Road. The 5 was once also diverted up Goodmayes Lane, along Green Lane then down South Park Drive to rejoin normal route due to a Tree on Longbridge Road.

When Dulwich Wood Park was closed during the mid 00's, the 3 was diverted via Gipsy Hill which was fun as Gipsy Hill is packed with cars and that morning, we had a Gemini on the 3 lol.
Another odd one was when High Street in Norwood Junction was shut meaning the 75 & 157 were diverted via South Norwood Hill, Southern Avenue & Auckland Road which can be extremely tight with a decker.

we had a Gemini on the 3 lol. What's lol about that? While on a southbound 132 (PVL160 ) yesterday, I noticed a northbound 132 (PVL161 ) turned off at the Sun-in-the-Sands towards Blackheath, then turned into Stratheden Road. I presume it continued to North Greenwich via the 108 route, rather than they usual route. Due to killer traffic on the A102.

Many moons back in the mid to late 90's, while the IRA was active in London, I was on almost permanent lates on the 11 from RA and it wasn't unusual to suddenly get multiple closures going in around Central London. A good few times Centrcomm just got absolutely flustered and make a call to say they were working on diversions but for the moment, if we could find our own ways round then we should. I well remember one night they shut Strand in front of us so off we went over Waterloo Bridge, then not two minutes later a call came through saying all Central area bridges were out of bounds. So, simply followed the Thames along the south bank passing bridge after bridge that had been shut until I finally got back across the river - over Wandsworth Bridge. Mind you I suspect we managed to visit most of Zone 1 during this period which must have been a nuisance for passengers - I really didn't mind!

The Geminis are LWB and trying to pass oncoming traffic was a pain that day with all the parked cars.

Moz Without going too far off topic I started work in 1995 and remember just how many tube closures / bus diversions there was almost on daily basis. Let alone the dreadful events at Aldywch news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/february/18/newsid_4165000/4165719.stm

A few years ago (Back in 2011) there was a diversion for all routes between Stratford and Bow Church whilst roadworks took place on Stratford High Street. Required buses to use the A12 up to Poplar, along the A13 route to Canning Town and then follow the 69 back into Stratford. Doing it on the 425 I must say this was pretty interesting!
