Hiya Ladies and Gent.
I was wondering if anyone had, or knows of someone who's had this problem.
Start at the beginning. I use to work as a bus driver for Go Ahead London at Northumberland Park.
Then In November just gone, I had a very serious heart attack... had stents fitted ect.. In the end I was laid off work on medical grounds after 6 months because of the delay of the treadmill test..
After awhile I passed the treadmill test required by the DVLA for me to drive a bus again. (9 minutes+)
So! I filled in the online application and a week later I got shortlisted to go to Camberwell for the tests ect.
Well all was going well, until the result of the urine test.. I proved positive for opiates and amphetamines. SHOCKED!! I've never taken drugs like those in my life! I even had to google opiates when I got home to see what they were!
So that was that.. No job.. Then I started looking into drug tests, and found, the drugs I'm on can give a "false positive" for these said drugs I was tested positive for in the urine test.
Its very frustrating trying to prove I didn't take the drugs they accused me of taking...
But now, 2 Doctors have taking up my case to prove I didn't take the drugs. Plus a statement from a lab technician at St James Hospital who said the drugs I'm on can cause a false positive in a urine test.
I'm now waiting on the results of the urine sample I sent yesterday.. Friday possibly I will know the outcome. For my appeal.
So Ladies and Gents, if something like this ever happens to you "I hope not" or someone you know please show them this tread "if its allowed to stay on here"
Here is a list of drugs I have to take for the rest of my life.
Ramipril
Bisoprolol
Ranitidine < People have been tested positive in a urine drug test for Amphetamines (False positive)
Atorvastatin
Brilique
If you have heard, or know of someone that’s had this sort of thing happen to them please comment below.
Thanks for reading.
Steve.

Thanks for reading. Steve. I work as a train operator for LUL we have to disclose ALL medication that is prescribed because of possible false positives in a random drug test or possible side affects affecting driving ability plus at company medicals we have to take details of medication also if someone was to eat a lot of poppy seed bagels it could show up as opiates. Hope you can get this sorted as the DNA (drug and alcohol) testing is not perfect when it casts doubt about someones integrity

My only comment is that I am surprised that Go Ahead or the testing company did not request a statement from you about any regular medication that you are on. I'd have thought this was a pre-requisite before any testing was undertaken and also to guide any final decision concering potential employment. There may be some medications which prevent you being able to drive a vehicle which carries passengers (just speculating here, I've not checked).
Obviously you need to decide what happens in the light of the re-test but it seems to me (based on what you have said) that there is a flaw in the process if an application can be rejected on the basis of a D&A test *without* a cross check against prescribed medication / medical history.

I read up on things you eat, and also tablets taken can give a false positive. Like ibuprofen. The DVLA are aware of my medication and have no reason for me not to drive a bus... so... its all very frustrating.

They had the list of tablets I take. Soon as the test was failed they couldn't wait to get me out the door. I spoke to the nurse who told me I had failed and she was very abrupt. I asked to see the doctor there, and he just said, there are no amphetamines or opiates in the medication I'm taking. Well what could I say? he's a doctor. It wasn't until later that I found out about the false positives on the internet. The thing is, how embarrassed I was because a lot of the talk was done in front of other members of staff and other drivers in the waiting room between the office and the nurses room. I couldn't wait to get out to be honest..

I went in McDonalds and had 2 cheese burgers before I went for the tests.. sesame seeds on the buns. I just looked on the net and found this. "Poppy and sesame seeds contain trace amounts of morphine and codeine – substances found in opium and heroin! Consuming foods with sesame/poppy seeds will not have the same effect as these drugs however the traces will appear in your urine sample and give a false positive reading"

Did you not have to list the medication you take on the application form. The doctors should have check against this seems very strange. Unless they are looking for a reason to try not to recruit you.

My appeal UPDATE: I gave another urine sample which was sent to the lab instead of being tested on site. I passed with flying colours. Just goes to show, how unreliable these tests are unless they a broken down properly by professional technicians.

Thanks for reading. Steve. Very sorry to read about your experience. I hope that despite needing to permanently take medication you are feeling much better. Others have mentioned reasons for false positives but I'm interested in the type of test that was undertaken... was it by chance a piece of kit that contains different bars for different substances which show when the urine flows into them? I've heard about these tests on LUL which are relatively new. Back in the day, if a driver was 'for cause' tested, they'd be stood down and the sample sent to the lab. This usually took a week to process and in the meantime, a driver remains 'off the handle'. This is clearly a waste of resource so these new kits show an immediate indicator which means the driver can get back on the train ASAP. Not sure if the bus companies use this same kit but I am not confident in the accuracy of something being bought in primarily as a way of saving time
