From early Jan Ensignbus will be adding extra peak time journeys to route 21 which they took on not so long back. That makes it every 30 mins in the peaks. They are also taking over the 261 from Amber Coaches and renumbering the route as their 61. There is now a little mini Ensign network developing in Brentwood - 21, 61, 81 and X81. I assume people value the more reliable and trustworthy service that Ensign give.

A lot of it is down to how sneaky they operate. Don't get me wrong. I love ensign and they frequently paid my bills whilst I done next to no work due to emergency calls out. But they like to get there foot in the door and then they fiddle there timetables to put there buses 2-3 mins in front of anyone else's, the drivers will dominate bus stops ensuring they get every passenger they can untill eventually they squeeze out any competition.

Really? I'm surprised to hear that. In the Brentwood area the X81 is their own idea. The 21 and 61 are replacements for routes others can't / won't run. The only question mark in my mind is the 81 - I don't know whether it filled a gap left by Thamesway or it was a competitive service against them. In respect of the Thurrock area they obviously slowly pushed out whatever residual "competition" there was as Arriva retrenched. I had no idea that they used were "fierce" competitors in the way you state.

If I remember correctly the 81 was withdrawn by first because they didn't see the service as viable for them to operate
