Reading this discussion I decided to have a bit of fun to see how tube zones by distance could potentially look, keeping in mind the proposed re-zoning of Canary Wharf to Zone 1 and while using the M25 as the London boundary. i.imgur.com/LSN3hrh.pngCertainly far from perfect, however hopefully gives an idea of where exactly some zonal changes could take place. Something interesting is that while places like Richmond. Stratford and Canning Town will probably fall into solid zone 2 as opposed to a 2/3 split if distances were used. Although there are many notable flaws with my quick mock up due to the zig zag nature of the London boundary. Dartford isn't much further out than Hornchurch is in terms of distance from Central London although one is noticeably further out using the currently used Zonal system. Croydon and Edgware also fall into Zone 4 under my mock up, it's on a similar radius overall to Barking, Ilford, Wembley and Gants Hill. Upminster actually falls into Zone 7 too, showing how far Zone 6 stretches out East, but not so much elsewhere as Upminster seems to be on a similar radius to that of Weybridge, Watford and Chesthunt. Due to the size of Heathrow, Zone 5 also seems to potentially fall under another zone as opposed to the current Z6 it's in. With the zones you have proposed, no need for a zone 6 ... all be covered by 5

Interesting to see how Kingston would move 2 zones, and is in the same zone as Richmond. Realistically it should be in Zone 5.

I would alter the zoning with the new Northern line extension. Elephant and Castle would be in Zone 1, whilst Kennington would be moved to Zone 1/2. An interchange at Vauxhall would have been preferable, and therefore Vauxhall should be moved to Zone 1. The new stations would be in Zone 2. If the Bakerloo line would be extended south via Walworth and Camberwell, both could be in Zone 2 or the former in Zone 1/2

I always think that Richmond is funny being in Zone 4 and only 16 minutes to Zone 1!

The Northern line should be split into two once Camden Town station is upgraded.
Northern: High Barnet - Battersea via Charing X Southern: Edgware - Morden via Bank
Note that this may cause confusion with Southern Rail so the Southern Rail should be renamed the Great Southern Railway (not so Great Southern Rail informally due to the strikes)
The new line should run with 1995 stock and coloured light purple on the map
The Battersea extension should really include a station at Vauxhall (yes it's more expensive to do this, but provides an interchange to the Victoria line)

To late to add any stations to the Battersea extension, unless you want to delay it's opening for years, a la Crossrail.

A station at Vauxhall is something TFL should have considered when the project started. Delaying it is unnecessary if the line's ready to open soon

Do we know if it was not considered and rejected? I believe it wasn't considered but I'm not 100% sure on this It was considered but rejected as the modelling suggested interchange footfall would be greater than the benefit of having reasonably empty trains running via Charing Cross

Wonder where the trains will come from.
