You're an East Londoner so you're more likely to come across people who dislike Ride London. Most of my tube journeys are in South and West London so I haven't really come across anyone who is bothered about Ride London. It's not really a typical conversation to have on the tube Well then your stats don’t make logical sense to the discussion here, no? Asking people in west London who are 0 impacted by ride London and then essentially making up stuff that “95% of people are supportive of ride London” is as correct as sadiq khan’s ULEZ stats / BoJo’s defence of his covid parties. As I have said a few times, let ride London, marathon (which I support by the way), big half and a few other events be plonked on your doorstep every few weeks and then we shall see. I am digressing but it’s the same condescending thematic on bus cuts - whenever an east London route is cut people are told to “live on with it” while every route in north / west London has to be saved because of history or a half mile unique stretch! Places like wapping / Isle of Dogs essentially get cut off in these events As others have said it's only a one day event and traffic will return to normal tomorrow. Besides it's a bank holiday tomorrow so it doesn't really matter. I'm sure you weren't confined to your house and if you were COVID lockdowns were worse.

I wish you would stop with the silly comparisons! The Bank Holiday comment is rather silly as not everyone is off work so today’s disruption could have really impacted people who only had today off but hey what does that matter. As I said earlier this event has been extremely disruptive compared to the marathon and other events held in the docks such as the triathlon.

I have said before that Ride London could be moved so it doesn't impact the same part of London each year. I also don't get your and others arguments about the disruption. One day lost (comparing to hundreds during COVID) isn't life changing!

One day lost (comparing to hundreds during COVID) isn't life changing! It’s not just as simple to plonk it somewhere else each year. It takes partnership funding from councils, TfL and various other agencies like the Met to enable road closures and security. Not to mention residents to consider, it’s ultimately why Surrey pulled their funding. Your point about it being a one day event is also incorrect, according to the BBC some roads in Essex have been closed since Friday.

That point absolutely screams of ‘I am going to spend time finding something out that proves you’re wrong’. In general this thread has been very much a one or two people against loads of others pile on. I do feel a little sorry for northlondon83, rightly or wrongly.

I didn’t have to look too hard, it took less than a minute. As for the rest I just don’t see the issue, you have made your points and others have spoken against them. It isn’t piling on when a clearly quite a few feel differently about this event. I wouldn’t have even commented in the first place but your whole lack of acknowledgement towards those who need the roads open was a huge red flag.

Here has goaded those who live in the most affected areas and refused point blank to see our side and used totally unsuitable comparisons in other parts of London. If I could delete threads after being commented on I would as this one has just been a nightmare.

To be honest with you, you must have created this thread for a reason, surely to discuss the impacts of Ride London. Some people object to the event itself like you whilst others support the event like myself. You may think my arguments are absurd but I think that they are perfectly reasonable. I still stand by my point that people are making a big deal out of it especially now as the event is over. I'm sure a few months down the line you'll look back on today with little significance. It's not like you weren't aware of Ride London taking place in your area of London. Besides you calling the thread a nightmare is ludicrous because you chose to contribute to the discussion

It’s not going to be ‘we all agree with WH241’ - unfortunately you poked one of the topics I feel intensely strongly about, and against the views of the majority here. In the case of this thread, I by and large agree with northlondon83, even if I don’t agree with absolutely the way he has put things. If that upsets you, well, that’s hard cheese I’m afraid. I’ll no doubt disagree with him elsewhere, as I also will with you.

And I’m taking part in that one 😉

I was cycling through south London this morning on my way to central London and was surprised to see so many cyclists! I got on the A23 in Brixton, where there were a bunch of cyclists who came from further south on the A23. We were then joined by even more when we got to Oval with many coming from the A3, and heading north towards Elephant and Castle. There were about 30-40 of us in total. I headed for Waterloo via Lambeth North, which was a fairly quiet section, but there were quite a lot again around Waterloo bridge heading north for Aldwych and Tottenham Court Road.
It's quite rare to see so many cyclists during the week. Many go on rides on Sunday when traffic is generally better, it was around 8.30am though so I'm not sure if they were heading for work or not. However cycling does offer a good alternative to get to work or other destination as opposed to taking a bus. Traffic through West Norwood and Tulse Hill this morning was quite bad however I wouldn't say that's abnormal for 8.30am on a Tuesday morning. I think stuff like Ride London and the Olympics have boosted cycling in London and the UK, as more see it as an attractive way to commute. You can even take a foldable bike on a train during rush hour and continue your journey by bike, which can speed up journeys. I know a lot of people have been quite negative about cycling/Ride London but there are a lot of benefits to cycling

It’s a super day out for a great cause. Broadly agree with your comments but I think there’s a debate to be had about whether the legacy objectives of the (fantastic) 2012 Olympics were delivered.
