Finally got to use the 255 extension coming home from Balham yesterday, and I take back the idea that it might be quicker than the 249. The gyratory at Streatham Hill was every bit as bad as St Leonard's. I guess when on the 50 as I am not waiting for it to stop at that point I do not pay as much attention and forgot what it was like.
Even though it was not that busy, there was someone wanting each of the stops though.

A few people got on at Weir Road. Of course, Saturday is the not the best day to compare it.

Apparently Val Shawcross (assembly member), some local councillors and residents fron the Weir Estate went for a celebratory ride today and had a "party" on board. TweetI agree about Streatham Hill. That traffic system is murderous to get through. I've been through there on only 3 buses and each one took over 20 minutes from joining the traffic queue to getting through the lights. This on southbound trips towards Streatham. How any route having to run that way is ever on time I do not know.

It is not even that busy a road, even with the gyratory for some Leigham Court Road traffic, just that the green phase on the lights is so short it does not take much to suddenly cause everything to start backing up. When the extension was first proposed I remember arguing against someone here suggesting it would be better going via Telford Avenue and Streatham Hill, which in hindsight now seems a useful idea even if just for southbound buses.

The phase of lights is also long between the red coming on and the red/amber returning. I used to hate getting the 137A/417 around the one way system and was pleased when they allowed buses to turn right directly into Streatham Hill.

Only time I'd experience such delays like you're describing (on the 50) would be when there was some sort of incident/diversion near St Leonards Church; that was rare though.

I had a ride on the Balham extension this morning, only about half a dozen other passengers on board although I did hear somebody commenting about how handy the new service is.
