Ring once bells should be on all buses. I agree, however on the odd occurrence, and a driver forgets to stop, if you give a couple of dings they do😂 not that it’s often but just saying Interesting you say that is its recently happened to me twice!

I am sure it's not disabled completely because driver 'may' forget, but I am sure it's not rocket science to program the bells to 2-3 max until doors are openened-closed. IDK but on newer ADL's they attempt to stop the spam by having a delay before someone can ring again, but you only have to wait like 5 seconds before you can hear the bell again. The best thing driver can do is just simply to ignore it, if you react to their stupidity it will only bait them to do something more stupid more, I was a kid like that once you're going home with few friends of yours just messing around even if you're not a complete idiot you just do it for heck of it and nothing will stop it lol. Too bad there is exception on the disabled ring because that one can ring almost non stop, or well it's at least twice as annoying when someone is spamming it. At no point should the driver show his principles and not stop at the bus stop due to spam though as much as it sucks.
PS, not sure about other drivers in general, but drivers rarely forget to stop when bell is rung, I have to say it almost never happens, I probably done it maybe twice in a year and I was genuinely apologetic to the passenger just completely my bad.

With the system the DLA's & PVL's had where the bell rang just once, I didn't encounter loads and loads of drivers failing to stop because of it and in the cab, you get a light on the dash saying bus stopping or something similar? As you say, something that happens not too often.

Yeah there is something on the dash, but in general I think they let people spam it especially considering the elder, because usually the elderly also prefer when they press the bell and hear it ring individually, legit 60% of people don't see the BUS IS STOPPING displayed on the LED display hence they feel more secure if they press it themselves even though someone already just pressed it. By the end of day if you're on like a 136 or something where the bus is always packed I can image you'd have a good headache from all the ringing though.

By the end of day if you're on like a 136 or something where the bus is always packed I can image you'd have a good headache from all the ringing though. As a passenger I've been caught out several times by signs/iBus next stop signs that have been illuminated that have turned out to be defective and actually, nobody pressed the bell so the driver doesn't know to stop. For that reason if I haven't specifically heard the bell ring, I always press the bell to make sure the bus stops. A lot of bus users will be conscious of the variable reliability of next stop signs which is probably why they do the same thing. The one bad thing about the 607 is the bell on those VWs can drive you up the wall - people don't stop pressing it! An example below - how many times does it go off between Hayes Grapes and Uxbridge County Court? 8 times in the space of 80 seconds! youtu.be/DyskRyco29U

Just looking at some old photos from March 2012. It was seven years ago this weekend when First ceased operation at Northumberland Park garage and Go Ahead, in the form of London General, took over. Funny to see how many routes and vehicles have changed hands / been removed from London service. Interesting that the last two VPLs with Metroline survived for almost a full seven years on from 2012.

So, we know that all buses on TfL routes should be Euro VI by October 2020. I wonder whether this requirement also applies to other buses entering Greater London eg Kingston - Guildford, Heathrow - Slough and Sutton - Redhill?

I was on a 126 MCV evolution once and it was full of school kids. It was out of order on the drivers side, but quite funny to watch. The kids were holding down the bell (the ear pearcing siren one) and the driver asked them to stop at the next stop. They carried on, and started to swing on the bars. The driver slammed on the brakes and told them to stop at once. Again, they continued to ring the bell and the driver asked passengers to tell him when they want to get off. The school kids wanted to get off, and we casually sped past about 4 stops at speed. Served them right IMO. Perhaps not the slamming on the brakes part Hopefully CCTV footage will be sent to their school to identify the culprits and they'll have their free travel entitlement removed? How is the poor driver supposed to concentrate on driving in that environment? lol, that would never happen

Today I would like to discuss and rant about my feelings for London as a whole.
Please don't be offended at all as this is my personal view only and not trying to infulence others.
I was born and raised in London, so basicaly I've been in London for all my life. As at today I just have started to hate the capital city and just think it's a dump and poo hole, sorry to say but I just can't see it getting any better at this rate. Other cities have also gone downhill but I couldn't comment on them as I haven't lived or worked there.
By the time I reach 40, I bet London will just deteriorate even more. The politician and officials in office have no clue of what they are doing and it's funny that they think "positive changes have happened in the last years or so". What a pity!
Seriously if I could, I'd get the hell out of London by tommorrow, but it would be harder for me as family live in London and I don't have a car to myself and the transport links aren't so great out of London. But I'm hoping by 40, yes, I will live by the south coast in a much better town.
Another issue is that the bus driver wage is a laugh out of London, I know this as a colleague at Stagecoach applied to join Arriva in Essex and when told the wage he decided to stay in London. Not sure how Stagecoach pay out of London, but we have had a couple of drivers going up north and one is back now so I'll ask them when I get a chance.
If your thinking that being a London bus driver is great, oh lord I'm telling you it isn't the way it looks like. The job overall is reasonable as you meet so many people whether it be customers and staff which I find very useful to share views with them.
The thing is that if I move out of London in the foreseeable future I don't know if I would cope ok. My mum now lives South of the river and it takes ages to get to her so I can't imagine travelling to another town. Time will tell but it is something on my mind that I am hoping to explore.
Thanks

I wonder whether this requirement also applies to other buses entering Greater London eg Kingston - Guildford, Heathrow - Slough and Sutton - Redhill? Yes, the new LSPs require it. (Strictly there are some older LSPs that haven’t yet come up for renewal so not all routes yet) There are a few areas on very fringe of London that are outside the low emission zone, and will also be outside the proposed heavy vehicle ULEZ

I've worked in public transport in London for over 25 years and I wouldn't want to live or work anywhere else.

My mum now lives South of the river and it takes ages to get to her so I can't imagine travelling to another town. Time will tell but it is something on my mind that I am hoping to explore. Thanks Thoughts Things go around in circles to some extent, I grew up in small Town on South Coast, wasn’t a lot to do, but back in 1960s and early 1970s was a lot more civic Pride. No litter or graffiti, or grass verges that were not mown etc. The bus ran every 2 hours. In those days a visit to next town got different shops, nowadays every High Street is a clone with same stores. Came to London for work, learnt to ignore the scruffiness and bags of rubbish laying around. But recently (I am now 54) we have been taking our daughter to University open days and realised other cities have overtaken London in some ways. Get all the same shops, cheaper entertainment, and less miserable people. There are a few places that are expensive (Bath, Cotswolds, Oxford etc), but generally costs are much lower. The main thing is congestion in London drives me nuts these days, so we have decided to leave London (after daughters A levels finish and she has gone to Uni). Can’t quite afford to retire at 56 but if I can get a local job for couple of years then I will be happy. Will I miss London probably not, never had a sudden urge to go shopping at 10pm, so can live without the 24 hour culture. Will I enjoy quieter roads and no epic traffic jams, almost certainly yes. For me it’s a quality of life thing, and being in a noisy congested city is no longer what I want. But not stupidly rural where need to drive 10 miles to nearest corner shop, but decent town with a City about 20 minutes drive away. And yes in some areas 20 minute off peak drive is 10-15 miles, in London sometimes 20 minutes driving barely gets you 2 miles. London is just cramming in more smallish apartments, doing very local bits of public realm (translation new paving slabs), nothing to do with quality of life. One other thing that finalised our decision, we did a trip last month and went in a pub for lunch, person on next table started chatting (never happens in London), turns out they had moved out of London and had no regrets (apart from hadn’t done it 5 years earlier), gave us a long list of things they now think are better. Ironically their daughter now visits them more than when she was few miles away in South London. We of course asked them if they missed London and they basically said no. Everyone is more relaxed, friendly and helpful out of London. Can’t wait to leave.
