All London Bus Strike January 13th

This will be interesting, I wonder if this will mean the majority of services will not run similar to the one back in 2012, or just like the recent TT one where routes run a reduced service

Last time round, I remember a very limited 197 service of two drivers which lasted a few hours at most.  No other routes round my way operated at all.

Maybe I'm a little naive, or is this Unite doing a bit of pre electioneering?
If I work for company A and I have a contract that pays me £x pounds p/h, but company B pays more, why should I then expect my employer to match company B's hourly rate?

Looking at the BBC London report on the news. 27,000 drivers are Striking across 18 bus operators. There isn't much more information but they are hoping that talks are held to avert this

Central London will be fun to drive thru as all the Sunday drivers take to the roads... The strike is pointless, these are all individual companies, you can't make them pay all the same rate.
If it was something like drivers on the District line getting less than drivers on the Piccadilly line whilst working for the same company being the Underground, I would understand. But it's like
complaining that a Punto isn't as quick as a Bugatti

Am I right in saying unite want re nationalisation of the London Bus industry?

Clearly if all firms paid the same, the process of tendering would collapse because the bids would be even closer than they already are.

Is it still the case that drivers at PB are paid less than HT ?

I also recall Sutton Garage drivers put on different rates of pay when Sutton Bus came in. Same for HD. Is that still the case ?

Does an ex First driver from X who transferred to LU with the 10 get paid more , less , or the same as a route 9 driver at V ?

Wouldn't it be great is only LT-operated routes were affected by strikes?

The BBC have a list of affected operators and it excludes Arriva the Shires, Arriva Kent Thameside, Sullivans, Quality Line. Therefore there may be limited services in a few places over and above any workings by drivers that don't strike / are not in Unite.

London’s 18 bus operators were accused of ‘burying their heads in the sand’ over ‘glaringly unfair’ pay disparities as Britain’s largest union, Unite announced that up to 27,000 bus workers would be taking part in a London wide bus strike on Tuesday 13 January.
The 24 hour stoppage follows the continued refusal by London’s 18 bus operators to enter into talks about a single London wide agreement covering bus workers’ pay, terms and conditions.

In contrast to tube drivers, there isn’t one collective pay deal for bus drivers in the capital, whose pay is negotiated on a company by company basis leading to pay inequality and disparities.

There are over 80 different pay rates covering London’s bus drivers, doing the same job, even driving the same route but for different rates of pay.
A refusal by the bus operators to address the issue has led to pay gaps of over £3 an hour for new starters opening up, with pay varying from £9.30 to £12.34 an hour depending on the company.

Commenting, Wayne King London regional officer for Unite said: “Passengers pay one fare to travel on London’s iconic red buses, yet there are over 80 different pay rates covering bus workers, many doing the same job or driving the same route but for different rates of pay.
“Strike action is not a step our members take lightly, but bus workers who keep London moving 24 hours a day, seven days a week, have had enough of pay inequality and unfair pay disparities.

“The blame for the disruption that strike action will cause sits squarely with London’s bus companies. They have repeatedly ignored our offers for collective talks and need to get their heads out of the sand and start negotiating meaningfully about ending pay inequality on London’s buses.”

Unite represents over 27,000 bus workers working for 18 bus companies who serve Greater London. These are: Arriva North, Arriva South, Selkent, London General, Metroline, Metroline West, Metrobus, CT Plus, London United, Abellio South, Abellio West, London Sovereign, Stagecoach, Blue Triangle, Northumberland Park, Tower Transit, Docklands and London Central.

Hmm, never knew that there was an operator called "Northumberland Park"   

But I guess they've split up the operations depending on their O license. Interesting to see that TT are striking despite they just averted another one, maybe the talks didn't work

Seen a list of operators who are striking and it seems only Quality Line, Arriva Kent Thameside & Sullivan Buses are the only operators who are not striking.

Not all drivers are members of Unite. IMO this is a waste of time, equal pay will never return to London. If these drivers can afford to lose a days pay then more fool them!
