If TFL decided for aesthetic reasons to have 5 used in central London along with other single digit numbered routes, and simply was going to swap route numbers. Which route would you like to see numbered 5, and therefore that number becomes new number for current 5 ? The 5 is simply and anonomaly that came about really as the Central section was slowly wound down and the outer section survived. There would be no real reason to change it now. Bit like how it always strikes me as odd now to imagine the 1 all the way down in Bromley Common. The 5 is not the only low-numbered route that doesn't reach central London (although admittedly it is the lowest). The 20, 32, 33, 34, 37 and 39 don't either.

I think Notting Hill Gate could just about fit Central London, but border. Don't think High Street Kensington would be central, so 49 is cancelled out, neither South Ken. The 70 does serve NHG thoufh

Then the 31 doesn't really reach Zone 1 since it's on the North and western ends of NHG

Camden Town in Zone 2 would be the Central London entry How? It's in Zone 2 It borders the Zone 1. Once you pass Mornington Crescent Station, you are in Zone 1. Thats just a 30 second drive down Bayham Street or Pratt Street and a 3 minute drive to Zone 1 mainline Euston station.

It doesn't reach Mornington Crescent though. i would have thought that Notting Hill Gate is closer since it is in Zones 1/2

My sort-of definition of "Central London" was reaching or crossing into the Congestion Charging zone (which is why I didn't include the 28 and 31) - perhaps I should have stated that clearly!

The days of central London bus routes being the top dog are long gone. Many are decimated or are a patch of what they used to be. The only route bearing a similar resemblance to the 5 would be the 15 or 135. Definitely *not* putting this forward as a serious proposal but swap the 5 with the 87! You'd be restoring the 87 to its traditional route and as the original 5 ran around the Clapham area, that would also be a nod to the past.

They could in 2006 I guess have extended the 87 from Barking to Canning Town as the 87 number had a long association with Romford.

Of these, routes 5, 33 & 39 used to reach the current zone 1: Waterloo, Kensington and Victoria/Oxford Circus respectively. Rumour has it that the next route to be curtailed outside zone 1 will be route 25.
