Rather common when I was a nipper but are there any current routes operating in this way? No. There are a couple of routes which have scheduled short workings in order to reduce costs - the 25 and 38. There are also corridors where previously overlapping journeys are now separately tendered routes - 253/254, 68/168/468, 88/94, 8/98, 10/390. Some of the overlaps these days are quite short. I am sure if I've missed something others will jump in.

The 208 was the last example of this, withdrawn on the 27th August 2010 used to run Lewisham - Bromley Common & Catford - Orpington with a 6 Minute Overlap & Sundays the full route, with the 320 extended to Catford on the 28th August. Has been 5 Years of silly timetabling of the 208 & 320 punching each other from Catford to Bromley Common / Bromley Common to Catford.

Doesn't the 221 still operate in this manner?

The 208 was the last route I remember running on two overlapping sections, thankfully they don't exist anymore. I was never fond of a route having overlapping sections, having two separate routes makes more sense.

Doesn't the 221 still operate in this manner? Some w/b 221s still terminate at North Finchley as short workings

Doesn't the 221 still operate in this manner? Depends on the OP's definition. I assumed two sections meant each section had different terminal points but overlapped in the middle. Routes like the 25, 38 and 221 all have a common terminal but with variation as to how far buses run in the other direction. In the old days I believe the 221 did Turnpike Lane to Edgware and Holborn Circus / Kings Cross to North Finchley. In the evenings / Sundays buses ran KX to Edgware. The southern section of that was lost 21 years ago.

I was never fond of a route having overlapping sections, having two separate routes makes more sense. It confused people on the 2 as well lol. It was only when the 2's Brixton to Crystal Palace journeys were renumbered '432' that Brixton lost its only remaining overlapping sections route. We did have the N159 as well except that ran in two sections that didn't overlap and, I can't quite remember, but I think that only happened either during week nights or weekend nights only - it ran as Marble Arch to Streatham (the old terminating point) and then Streatham to New Addington, Homestead Way

I believe it did before the 427 number was reintroduced. Others I remember are the 36 until the 436 was introduced, the 49 before the 249 was introduced & the 63 though overlapping journeys were withdrawn long before the 363 number came into use.

Rather common when I was a nipper but are there any current routes operating in this way? Before bendy buses were introduced, the 12 used to run between Notting Hill Gate - Peckham & Oxford Circus - Dulwich Library (I think)

I used to live in Baker Street and would always get the 27 to school, but the adventurous side of me liked to risk being late for school just for the sake of getting the 12 from Marble Arch and experience a good thrash along Bayswater Road

Overall there was a big capacity increase but clearly it was needed and generated new traffic (witness the 148's popularity).
