Out of interest, roughly how many people use the Goblin from say Barking beyond Walthamstow or Gospel Oak beyond South Tottenham - the only reason I ask is I've done the whole journey by the two replacement buses plus the Victoria between Walthamstow Central & Seven Sisters once and it takes absolutely forever even with quick drivers and favourable road conditions. Surely, there will patronage loss as a result with those who can, seeking alternative arrangements? Indeed there would be a large patronage loss as I think happened when there was a bus replacement service during the electrification works. I don't know passenger numbers. If you look at the annual patronage numbers published by ORR for last year then you will see the scale of the "bounce back" at GOBLIN stns. I think Diamond Geezer also did his usual article about the most / least popular London railway stns a couple of months ago and he remarked about the change at GOBLIN stations.

A few people who I know live local to Crouch Hill now prefer walking to Finsbury Park and enduring the Vic line scrum in the morning peak as "in the time it takes to Kings Cross, we could still be waiting on the platform at Crouch Hill".
It's unfortunate that the 710 units still aren't in service, especially considering the image Mr Snoggle posted above. Hindsight is a wonderful thing -- it's not like ARL can just lease a batch of 319s and 'loan' dispatch staff from GTR/SE/SWR/GA (I know, units must be cleared to run, leasing, available staff -- wishful thinking).
Still, I'm optimistic that Bombardier will have at least a unit or two signed off before the 172s all leave. Either way full bustitution looks to be the easiest outcome.
On another note, has any electrically hauled freight been down the line yet?

One of the earliest clips of a 710 on test has an electric freight going the other way. It should be in a post on this thread a few pages back (assuming it's not been deleted).

For those following the fun with the class 710 trains it seems that a test train was out last night on West Anglia. This normally means Liv St - Enfield Town runs but judging from photographic evidence 710 269 ended up being parked at the unwired Broxbourne tamper siding. I've seen only one comment that partly explains how this happened and that's there was a signalling error. The train itself is apparently undamaged and didn't suffer a failure. I can only assume the driver took the wrong signal at Edmonton Green and headed towards Cheshunt and for whatever reason the only option was that the train had to be shoved into the siding at Broxbourne. It looks like a 315 parks overnight in the bay at Cheshunt so that wasn't available to turn / park the train. I assume that there was probably some panic about just getting the 710 out of the way rather than have it try to use crossovers or anything else that it's not run over before. There is a loco move from Liv St in the early hours of 24/1 to Broxbourne to retrieve the 710 and then another path, via Tottenham Hale!, to get it back to Willesden TMD. What fun! www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O76448/2019/01/24/advanced

I am still getting my head around an electric train being sent down un-electrified track. Lucky it wasn't a train in passenger service!!!
I would not expect there to be any damage, after all I would expect a modern train to be able to cope safely with a power loss.....and in the case of the 710s is this not already tested with unexpected retracting pantographs?

I don't think it was sent down an electrified track. I think there was a decision to park it out of the way so I expect something shunted it into the tamper siding. It's only accessible from the north so I can't quite see how the 710 would get in there by itself. The only error would be taking a wrong branch at Edmonton Green and heading towards Cheshunt.

'Thomas and the GOBLIN' would make a worthy addition to those popular children's stories. Only trouble would be trying to tone down the satire for a young audience!

At this rate, you got more chance of Thomas turning up on the GOBLIN then the actual service Not sure Annie & Claribel could handle the loads though

Of course with Thomas and all his friends there would be more than enough trains for the line....the Fat Controller would see to there being a perfect service.
The ORR couldn't possibly let them be in passenger service as their carriages don't have the requisite cameras!!!

In today's society, more like the Thin Controller who was also a character from Thomas The Tank - for those who don't know, from memory, he was in charge of the Narrow Gauge engines in the books (the TV series had the Fat Controller in charge instead).

The Thin controller also did make appearances in the TV series, when the narrow gauge engines made an appearance.
