Sooo.... after much time wasting I’ve got an interview with go ahead next week. The lady told me I’d be there all day! Blimey when I worked for arriva it was done in a few hours lol. Like most companies I’ve heard mixed reviews but I’m keeping an open mind. Watch this space!! All day.........that's likely to put off some potential candidates straight away. Some of these companies really need to take a long hard look at themselves before bemoaning staff shortages. Good luck with it.

If your interview is taking place in Camberwell then that's likely to be the case and therefore the reason why you're there all day. There could also be more than one interview too. If it's just the interview at a garage then the lady you spoke to must have been exaggerating. I have a placement interview with a certain London based train company next week and that'll take about three hours so this kind of time should be expected, especially if its an assessment centre you've got

I failed the mini bus driving assessment so was let go then. I had Maths and English assessments and they also test you for drugs etc so that all takes a bit of time.

I personally hate them but they're a good way for companies to have an idea of what skills potential candidates have

That and the fact that they’ll likely have a rough idea of what percentage would be successful.

They sent me an email this afternoon saying that they are busy that’s why it takes all day! It also said they will do my medical on the day and sort out my staff pass. Not sure if I should be pleased or worried that they want to start me ASAP. I guess they are like every other operator and as they say if you have 2 arms 2 legs and can drive you’re in. They’ve also asked me what days I want to work so I’ve said mon to thurs thinking they will refuse but as long as I don’t go back on that it’s fine. Desperate or what?

Not necessarily if there is assessment then medical then interview that could take a while especially if there is a group of applicants going through the recruitment stage at the same time There's quite a bit of paperwork to fill out along the way. For some recruits there is also a cab test in the trainer bus to ascertain whether the relevant recruits are within the weight and height parameters necessary for safe operation of the buses. You also get measured up for the uniforms so that they are ready by the time you have passed your test and have been allocated to a garage. The general process can take up the best part of the day as there's often a bit of waiting in between procedures.

I’m already a pcv holder? I’ve been a driver since 1996! If they want me to start within a week I don’t think I’ll have a uniform that quick.

There are many operators and some agencies who need drivers to cover the work and will take on people with a PCV licence with few questions asked. There are loads - have you tried applying to them? Other operators have more comprehensive recruitment processes. Go-Ahead, Stagecoach etc require more than just a PCV licence. They'll be looking at literacy and numeracy skills, doing a medical to confirm you are fit to drive to their standards, assess your driving skills etc. They will also check references. They are experienced enough to know that everyone has a history and not all of it will be good in some cases. Other things may also be observed, such as attitude. I know you speak favourably of your prospective employers so this shouldn't be an issue. Sometimes you have to jump through hoops to get to where you want to be!

You want to be a fly on the wall in a recruitment office for a day! I had my assessment day at Metroline (WJ). Turned up in a suit and was polite and compliant with the process. I think 12 people were booked in for assessment. 11 were eliminated fairly quickly. There were no shows and late people who missed the tests. One turned up in ghetto fabulous attire and was sent away. A few failed to bring ID and licence documents that were very clearly stated as necessary for the day and were sent away. There were some attitude failures with one person starting a full on argument with recruitment staff and was required to leave the premises. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and imagined recruitment departments have to deal with this sort of thing on a daily basis. People who either aren't serious about getting a job or haven't prepared for the big day. I was the only one who made it through to the medical, driving assessment and interview that morning and got the job. To be honest, the operators make it quite easy for PCV holders that meet their requirements to get a chance with them. It can seem there are a lot of steps to follow but for good reason. Some people really don't want to follow the recruitment process so there's a conflict there.
