Also in Orpington, route 208 is unnecessary as it duplicates routes 61, 353, 320 & 47. nearly every route in London duplicates another route in one form or another. I think what MetrolineGA1511 is trying to say is that routes that do not have a single stop to themselves and are duplicated by different routes for every single stop are unnecessary.

But my point is you're going to find loads of routes that don't have a single stop to themselves, I wouldn't say those routes are unnecessary though.

Route 140 could be deemed as unnecessary as it only has two stops that it doesn't share with another regular day route: 'Barnhill Community School' (which is only also served by school route 696) and 'Wood End Lane'. The route is duplicated by routes 105 and 111 from Heathrow Central (start) to New Road, duplicated by route 90 from Harlington Corner to Hesa Road, duplicated by route E6 from The Grapes to Willow Tree Lane, stops at Barnhill Community School, duplicated by route 90 from Kingshill Avenue to Northolt Station, duplicated by route 395 from Northolt Station to Castle Road, serves Wood End Lane, duplicated by routes 487 and 398 from Danemead Grove to Corbins Lane, duplicated by route 114 from South Harrow Station to Harrow Bus Station, duplicated by routes 258 and 340 from Harrow Town Centre to Long Elmes / Harrow Weald Bus Garage (end). Obviously, it really isn't unnecessary due to its orbital nature and it being one of the top 10 busiest routes in London.
Route 460 could be deemed unnecessary as it is duplicated by route 13 from North Finchley Bus Station (start) to Llanvanor Road and then by route 260 from Childs Hill / Finchley Road to Pound Lane (end).
Route 68 is duplicated by route 168 from Euston (start) to Elephant & Castle and then by route 468 from Elephant & Castle to West Norwood (end).
Route 205 only serves its first stop Cleveland Terrace solely, then duplicated by route 27 from Paddington Station to Great Portland Street Station / Euston Road, duplicated by route 30 from Warren Street Station to Penton Street, duplicated by route 214 from Angel Station to Old Street Station, duplicated by route 135 from Shoreditch Fire Station to St Botolph Street and then duplicated by route 25 from Aldgate East Station to Bow Church (end).
Route 135 is duplicated by route route D6 from Crossharbour Asda to Jack Dash House, duplicated by route D7 from Stewart Street to Salter Street, duplicated by route D3 from Limehouse Police Station to Limehouse Station, duplicated by routes 15 and 115 from Stepney Methodist Church and Aldgate East Station, duplicated by route 205 from Duke's Place to Old Street Roundabout and shares stop Moorfields Eye Hospital (last stop) with routes 21, 76, 141 and 271

It's really quite simple. elementary even. Once you've got rid of the 'unnecessary' routes you'll find you've no need of continuing 'necessary' routes, because the bird will have flown, taking most of the remaining passengers with it, leaving the free passholders and the fare evaders to fight it out amongst themselves, with nil income to TfL. Having to change buses once or twice each way, with long walks between stops at many locations, will see some of those passholders to an early grave, which won't bother London's Mayor one iota, any more than it would have bothered the previous incumbent, whose totally undeserved elevation to Prime Minister and Chief Destroyer will have been noted by Khan, ready for when Labour finally wakes up and turfs out the deadwood Corbyn, way too late of course, both for them and the country.

Amazing how you see a thread about unnecessary bus routes as an opportunity to verbally assault those who aren't here to defend themselves.

The 205 was introduced to provide an alternative to the Circle line for people travelling between main line stations.

It could be me but I'm genuinely lost as to what this discussion is all about?

Same genuinely can't think of a route that is unncessary. No, I meant the discussion between palacefan & busaholic palacefan made no attempt to argue with the tenets of my argument concerning so-called unnecessary bus routes, instead taking umbrage with my cheek in bringing the subject of powerful politicians into it, as though my comments or thoughts on these 'gentlemen' posed some sort of threat to them. I suspect it was my reference to Boris Johnson that particularly irked him, just as Sid always rose to the bait over his idol. I believe in holding powerful politicians to account, and this is my small way of having my voice heard. When someone on here then starts making personal assumptions about me, a non-public figure they know nothing about, then I reserve the right to respond in a jocular way. I personally don't intend to get into any long-running spats on here, oe even short-running ones come to that. There are already a couple of regular contributors I never respond to for that reason, because I can see what they're after. So, as far as I'm concerned, discussion over. P.S. I never write anything with a view to getting 'likes' but then equally I never write anything with a view to 'getting at' any contributor either.

I just wonder why you keep hijacking various threads to slag off people you don't like? If you want to berate Boris Johnson or anybody else perhaps you could start a new thread on the subject.
