petition.parliament.uk/petitions/331453This seems to have caused quite a stir elsewhere. They've managed to reach the threshold so will at least require a response from Parliament now so will be interesting to see what they come up with. It has no chance of winning a parliamentary debate .... majority of MPs constituents dont benefit from it ... it is not a national perk

Might be if they can't get concessions for similar funding in their own constituencies. Looks bad if you vote for something to receive central government funding your constituents do not get. I would certainly be asking questions of my MP in such a scenario.

Would also look bad however if you intentionally go out of your way to increase hardship on children.

But is it really causing hardship? I dont think so. Just taking an underserved privilege away. What have London kids done deserve free travel the rest of the country does not receive? Nothing.

Kids outside London should have free travel as well, don't think anyone has argued that only London kids need it more or only should have it.

The cost of sending my kids to school in Kent , on a bus, is madness. For a service which is rubbish too. Frequently late, dangerously overcrowded, rubbish vehicles, I mean it really is a joke. If I could drive them everyday I would. London kids are lucky. In fact, the school mine go to, the London kids get the bus for free !!! ( 601 ) whereas every other parent has to pay up to £350 p.a for a cramped minibus.

But it should not come as an unexpected parental cost .... you know it is coming so you budget for it .... bet more was spent on the previous years holiday.

My cousins just said Finchley could definitely do with some form of fare. He said 20p would be ideal because it could bloody well help the overcrowding on the 143 & 643!!!

Are you asking me that question or just being deliberately obtuse ?

I think free travel has had its day in the current climate and should be looked at hard when its reintroduced. I don't see what makes London children different to the rest of the country and why in the last 20 years parents suddenly couldn't afford to pay fares but plenty have the latest Nike Trainers and IPhone.

Not all parents , carers etc do spend loads of money and some are on much lower incomes now, perhaps even under threat of being made redundant. My kids certainly don’t get bought top of the range of anything. Hand me downs and holidays in the UK. Because we can’t afford to go abroad,
Of course we budget for cost of sending the kids to school. But it is something I would rather , a) like to be free or b) not bother sending them by bus anymore because we could put that £1k towards home improvements or something else.
Choice of schools comes into play as well. In Kent there is the 11+ still. So you want them to pass this, then it means the going to a school perhaps further away. Hence, needing to travel by bus , if it were not to impinge on parents working day.
