I wish it could be that way but pubs are profit motivated, so they'll stay open for as long as possible while those inside intoxicate their heads off. The reality is that many are irresponsible, so the gov can't trust people to use their "common sense" as quoted by BJ so they instead have to take action to control the spread. Again in 2 months we have gone from encouraging and supporting the hospitality sector, to saying they can't be trusted ... most pubs I have been in lately take social distancing and cleanliness very seriously. Sorry, they are just being scapegoated as an easy target ... just like motorist would be if they could make up the faintest of links to the spread of Covid. The pubs themselves can be trusted, I was referring to the lot who use the pubs that can't be trusted. As you mentioned, pubs take Covid seriously. But you are indeed correct, it's not fair on the pubs, but unfortunately something has to be done to reduce the spread (although the gov's policies are not as effective as they should be). I in fact believe that schools and universities have had a significantly greater influence on rising infections than pubs and restaurants but of course one is a necessity, one isn't. Not to say that pubs don't also have a big influence. Also don't forget that MPs should be setting an example, not drinking after 10pm whilst everyone everyone else is forced out of pubs. Reinforces the whole "if they aren't following the rules why should I?" ideology from Dominic Cummings.

Agree politicians have to be seen to be doing something ... and pubs and restaurants are unfairly seen as easy targets ... as can be seen by the responses on here today

An innovative idea for pubs in these difficult times to attract people working from home, some coffee shops do similar offers...... www.bbc.com/news/uk-54472414

Drop this silly rule of everything closing at 10 ... allow restaurants and pubs to stagger their closing times as they see fit ... and have random checks on pubs and restaurants to ensure they are following the rules and crackdown on those that aren't. Seem far more proportionate than singling out a sector that can have little effect on the overall pandemic. It has to be cheaper than instructing all these places to close and picking up 67% of the wages bill.

Believe me I'm no happier about it than you are but keeping covid in check has to take precedence over everything else at the moment.

It obviously doesn't take precedence as Educational establishments and care homes are the worst spreaders. So what is being done here if it takes precedence? Nothing!

But education and health are enshrined as basic essential rights of the people, going to the pub is not. I understand the point you have made and I agree but ultimately closing bars, pubs and restaurants earlier for the most part drives people out of towns and cities and into their homes. It also in turn encourages them to stay home, which based on evidence of Covid outbreaks in cold store warehouses and food processing plants, could only be a good thing. Regardless of those who choose to play cricket or party in the street the vast majority will just go home which in turn helps protect them. Believe me I would rather sacrifice a pub than having an entire undereducated generation, because more time out of school will see them having a lack of basic fundamental education, not to mention the social development and mental health issues that could come with being out of school.

Good for those who have to many distractions at home and would help pubs financially as well. Just as long as proper social distancing measures take place then all is good.

They are the major sources of infection. If you can not get your scientists to work out a way a getting it under control in those environments, you are never going to control the virus. Absolutely no point nibbling at the edges causing large amounts of economic pain in industries that will have negligible effects. The virus will only spread further if you can not control the major sources of infection. You might as well give up now and says let's have a free for all. Whatever else you do will be a complete waste of time otherwise.

So let’s close schools, those disadvantaged children and teenagers fall even further behind and in a few years you’ll be complaining about how they aren’t able to attend uni or do a-levels because they are woefully undereducated. Then at the same time the education gap grows even larger between the richest and poorest all because you couldn’t give up a beer. I would beg you to look at the proverb ‘For want of a nail’ to understand how a single event can escalate to something no one can foresee.

I would beg you to look at the proverb ‘For want of a nail’ to understand how a single event can escalate to something no one can foresee. Not saying they need to be closed. These top scientists need to come up with a solution to tackle areas of infection, rather closing a whole host of industries at huge economic for negligible gain. If you can't control the reported source of over 50% of infections you have zero chance of containment. If by closing pubs a restaurants, let's say you stop 5% of infections, the other 95% are going to swallow that reduction up in a few days with the R number as high as it is. So huge economic cost, and you have gained very little and your number of cases continues to increase. I was in hospital in August, virtually everyone that entered for any kind of treatment was tested, and you got tested every 6 days you were in there. The hospital's must do 1000s of tests each week (maybe even day). Maybe in the worst areas we need a mobile testing sight visiting schools/care homes at least weekly ... something has to be done, or you might as well inject the virus now and get it over and done with, and hope you show no symptoms ... as you stand a more than reasonable chance of getting it over the winter if nothing is done whilst living with fear.
