Some things from a bus improvements booklet from 2002
New route 332, Crystal Palace – Brixton. 'The present southern section of route 2 between Brixton and Crystal Palace would be renumbered 332. Frequencies would be as at present, with evening and Sunday frequencies of 4 bph.'
This is effectively today's 432.
New route 385 Roehampton – West Brompton. 'It is proposed to restructure route 74 into two separate services to help improve reliability. Route 74 would run between Putney High Street and Baker Street Station, with new route 385 running between Roehampton, Danebury Avenue and West Brompton. The Monday to Saturday peak and daytime frequency on route 74 would be 9 bph, whilst evening and Sunday frequencies would be 6 bph. Route 385 would run at 7.5 bph during the day on Mondays to Saturdays, and 6 bph during the day on Sundays. There would be 5 bph during the evenings.'
New route 900 Paddington Station – Liverpool Street Station. 'The southern section of Stationlink servicesSL1 and SL2 is to be replaced with a new service numbered 900, running between Paddington Station and Liverpool Street Station. The existing Stationlink routeing will be followed, except for minor alterations that will not involve missing out any stops. The service will continue to be ‘limited stop’, with an extra stop at St Thomas’s Hospital. The frequency will be increased from 1 to 2 bph. There will be no early morning or late evening service. Route 900 will use new accessible dual-door low floor buses.'

I found that paper document the other day actually when I was sorting out at home. Yes the 430 and 432 were initially going to be the 385 and 332 and the 900 behind the 705 (now withdrawn).

I seem to remember consideration in re-routing the 295 between Wandsworth Bridge roundabout and Clapham Junction, presumably via Trinity Road and St John's Hill

Years ago the N7 was proposed to be extended from Northolt to Rayners Lane.
More recently there was a TfL consultation to reroute the 332 (or 322 as TfL quoted!) via Maida Hill between Kilburn & Paddington.
Last year the 98 was set to be re-extended back to Russell Square following the withdrawal of the 10 until the 14 was chosen in association with the Tottenham Court Road route changes.

That's a shame the 98 was chosen as it would have maintained the link with Marble Arch and Oxo to Russell Square as opposed to just linking the British Museum with TCR. The 14 could have used the stand the 134 used and still been cut from Warren Street.

It changed so that the 73 could be shortened and to maintain a routes from the full length of Oxford Street to Victoria with the withdrawal of the 500 route. End of the street had the 2 group and Oxford Circus had the 25 but the full length wasn't linked to Victoria. I still don't really know why the 73 and 390 swapped thou. Whilst there was a slight saving switching the routes to Victoria in terms of freq, the Archway section gained an increase it didn't really need. I believe the developers of the land round the back of King's Cross had to put up some section 106 money, which was used to increase the frequency of the 390. With that funding in place I can see why TfL felt it would be a better use of resources to send the now-frequent 390 to Victoria instead of the 73.

I wonder why 385 was chosen. Maybe as it follows a different routing to Roehampton then the 85 people may have got confused.

The 14 could have used the stand the 134 used and still been cut from Warren Street. I agree that Oxo-Russell Sqaure link was so nifty and useful for tourists trying to reach the British Museum. However, given that there is a plan to pedestrianise Great Russell Street perhaps TfL picked the 14 as it offers connections similar to the Piccadilly line so are likely to be met with less opposition then they would be if they were pulling the 98 out of Russell Square instead.

There were plans to extend the 3 beyond Crystal Palace down the hill to Anerley Station and on the other end via Charing Cross Road to Tottenham Court Road. Don’t know if we’re thinking of the same consultation but back in late 2016/early 2017 TfL proposed extending the 3 further north than TCR to Russell Square. consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/bus-routes-3-137-and-n3/

I never really saw the point of it as it simply added more buses to the congested Charing X Rd and Cambridge Circus.

Here's an interesting one - I don't believe it ever got to consultation stage. When the 405 was awarded to Metrobus in 2003, it was proposed to reroute it via Purley Way, Waddon and Pampisford Road, as well the car park of Tesco in Purley - yet continuing to have the same trip cycle time of 2hrs using 6 buses. Obviously never gonna work, and most of the Metrobus team knew this. When they route tested it, the Metrobus guys were proven right - there was no way it would reliably work with that routing in a 2hr trip cycle, nor did the 10m Darts fit in the car park at Tesco. So in the end, the route was routed via Warham Road and Pampisford Road instead of going via Purley Way - an arrangement that continues to this day. Interestingly when the 405 moved over, it was amongst the worst ten performing low-frequency routes in London under Connex operation. Within a few months of Metrobus operation, it was in the top ten for performance - partly helped by one of our senior managers keeping an eye on things whilst drinking in their favourite pub along the route! Back in the 80s, when the 289 was tendered for the first time, there was a proposal to reroute between Waddon and Purley via Waddon Way and Pampisford Road. There's a few from the Jubilee Line extension plans that never made it. A P10 from Canada Water to Crystal Palace (through the 'Five Estates' whatever they are) partially replacing what became the 363. A 377 via the existing 77 from Clapham Junction to Waterloo then on over the 381 to London Bridge, where the 381 would have been curtailed (and conveniently allowing the 77A to be renumbered in due course). The rest would have become 447 from Tooting to Clapham then via what is now the 156 to Vauxhall.

The 207/607 were to be cut back to Shepherds Bush station but that never happened.
