Also ran the D8 and D9 and various times in the 90s and also the 108. the D8 and D9 contracts were pretty strange at the time. IIRC the D8 was Thamesway on weekdays and Kentish Bus at weekends and the D9 was Kentish Bus (I think during the week) and Grey Green at the weekends, both linked to upgrade works on the DLR where it was closed after 2000 and all weekend. Kentish Bus ran the P14 through the Rotherhithe Tunnel for a while as well Kentish Bus also ran the North London Line replacement routes during construction of the Jubilee Line extension between Stratford and North Woolwich using Leyland Lynxs from the 108 and Atlanteans on a peak hour route that ran via Plaistow instead of West Ham LOTS TLB Magazine (201/202) ran a two part article about the issue of buses services on the Isle Of Dogs which was a really interesting read and covered the D8 and D9.
I remember the North London replacement buses well. The NLX service duplicated the 241 to Stratford from Custom House to used to see this frequently. I might be wrong but think one of the Atlanteans ended up having a mishap in West Ham Lane after taking a wrong turn.

The bus network on the Isle of Dogs was really quite interesting. After having literally the D1 and (I think) the 277 serving the Island the network exploded with LT launching the D5, D6 and D7 initially and the sprawling network of minibus services launched by Docklands Minibuses running blue Ford Transit minibuses. Not sure if there is a network map of the old Docklands Minibus network online somewhere.

I had no idea Kentish buses were so big, in terms of networks coverage. Right across London it seems. I only thought they served North Kent and a bit of South East London.
The route I knew of was the 477, which ran from Orpington to Dartford , before Bluewater opened. The last time I travelled on that route with Kentish Bus was around 1994 as a kid.
With regards to Crystals, where was their garage? I’ve found no information about them online.
Bit of useless information here- when Stagecoach London won the 146 route in 2016, I was the first driver to drive that route! Well from Downe anyway.

I also didn’t know that Kentish Bus replaced London County, unless I’m mistakes there? I seemed to remember them both operating in the early 90 atleast.

The last address I've seen for Crystals' garage was 127 Dartford Road, Dartford, DA1 3EN.
Do you mean London & Country? Both Kentish Bus and London & Country were fragments of the pre-privatisation London Country operation, which covered everything on the outskirts of London. In preparation for privatisation, London Country was split into 4 bits, 2 of which were London Country South West (LCSW) and London Country South East (LCSE). After privatisation LCSW became London & Country while LCSE became Kentish Bus.
Both operators ended up as part of the British Bus group in the 1990s (London & Country were part of British Bus from the start, then Kentish Bus were acquired in 1994). In 1995 most of London & Country's London operations were devolved to a separate operation called Londonlinks, which was placed under Kentish Bus management - so yes, in most of London, Kentish Bus effectively replaced L&C.
British Bus were then bought out by Cowie in 1996. Cowie went on to rebrand themselves as Arriva and rationalised their London operations. Londonlinks was absorbed back into L&C. Arriva Kent Thameside (formerly Kentish Bus) mostly retreated to their original territory in North-East Kent, although they continued to run some London contracts from Dartford and Northfleet. Arriva Croydon & North Surrey (formerly London & Country) also mostly retreated to Surrey. The London bits of both operations were absorbed into Arriva London.

amazing how some of these later became part of the TfL network after the Docklands Minibus routes were withdrawn
