I was thinking today how really up untill 2003 there was quite a variety on Sundays which has all gone now. I was out in Colliers Wood and it reminded me how in 1990 still there could be 49s (either via Tooting Broadway or continuing from Streatham Garage via Mitcham) to Merton Garage aswell as 88s to Mitcham then continuing to AL to give Phipps Bridge a Sunday service. 19s aswell had Sunday journeys to AL via Tooting Broadway. Obviously these came about as overlaps weren't needed and roads were quieter so the 19 and 88 could reach their old terminals and the 219 not run coupled with the fact that all Routemaster routes were OPO on Sunday.
Arguably 2003 was the last year as it was the last time you had 2s going to Crystal Palace all the way to Marylebone Station which you couldn't see on week days. Obviously now every route runs exactly the same on what was the day of rest before.

I know the 267 Sunday extension to Hampton Court got dropped, but that lingered on until about 2011 The 246 still has a Sunday extension to Chartwell The 357 still has a Sunday extension into grounds of Whipps Cross Hospital

Apologies if not fully related but was the last time routes ran in sections 2010 on the 208 up until the 320 was sent up to Catford Bridge?

True, and lots of routes had different vehicle types on Sundays, especially single-deckers on double-deck routes (still the case on the 357). In many cases the Sunday service was run from a different garage, and in some cases by a different operator (e.g. 38, 190, 320, 391).

Of course the worst aspect of Sunday variation in the 90’s was Midibuses .
London United were particularly awful, with big bus routes 9,111,120,220,267,285 and 290 being DT/DR operation. At one point, FW only fielded 11 M’s on Sundays on the 71 and half the allocation of the 281 ( 3 each between AV and FW). Only began to change when the shops were allowed to open on Sundays which created a big rise in passengers on Sundays,
But it did also see L’s on the 94, T’s from CF on the 10 which was nice to see in Hammersmith, and one of my favourite Sunday extension, the 7 to Richmond.

The 208 only lasted with sectional working for so long because the plan to replace the northern section with the 199 kept getting delayed (due to lack of stand space), and it took many years for that plan to be abandoned in favour of the 320 extension. The 199 extension to Bromley had been included in the tender spec as far back as 2004!

Ironically many of those midibus conversions took place just before Sunday trading was introduced. Some routes were even converted afterwards, e.g. the Sunday 98 was converted to Dart operation in 1998, when Sunday trading was already in full swing (especially on Oxford Street). To AC's credit they did chuck out as many DDs as they could manage in practice.

I wonder if TFL ever considered just re numbering a section of the 208 ie 208 Lewisham to Brom Com and lets say 278 Catford to Orpington 7 days a week.

Even on Saturdays, you had (and in some instance, still have) some variations like the 319 running beyond St Leonard's Church to BN during shopping hours to serve the shops by Odeon in Streatham. Today's variations are more to do with PVR's where a few routes have a higher PVR on a Saturday than during the week.

There was some real oddities in East London up until 1993/1994
The 262A was a Sunday version of the 262, but followed the current 300 route from Newham Way to Beckkn via the docks.
Also on Sundays, the 5 ran beyond Canning Town all the way up to Old Street Station (which continued up until the late 90s,) the 15 ran through to East Ham and the 147 ran beyond Keir Hardie Estate all the way up to Stratford via the 241 route.

I remember in my area the 43 was diverted via Shoreditch / Liverpool Street on Sundays (vice Moorgate). Also the 4 was Archway - Angel on a Sunday, 17 was Archway-KGX on weekends, and Grey Green had their Volvos working the 19 on Sundays.
Then there were all the Brent Cross curtailments outside of ‘shopping hours’
