The problem with R1 and R11 is that both head for Green Street Green, but by very different pathways. You regularly have people boarding the wrong route in Orpington High Street, especially for those heading to Orpington Hospital who are not au fait with these 2 routes. I could never understand why the R1 number was retained in 2001 when the route was radically changed around St Pauls Cray, the Bromley Common section was lost and it replaced the R3 through Chelsfield. It was almost an entirely different route. The R routes seem to have had that done to them since their introduction, endless fiddling from TFL whilst keeping the same route numbers and expecting passengers to keep up. Look at routes like the R6 and R8, routings dramatically changed and then a few years later a new incarnation of the same number randomly appears. So you’d have to forgive Orpington passengers for slipping up every now and then

So you’d have to forgive Orpington passengers for slipping up every now and then I like the idea of the number 429 for the R11 - a historic homage to the 229 that used to go that way.
