Or even just N571 like has been suggested previously. I doubt there have been many issues with the N20 which has no daytime equivalent in that neck of the woods (I’ve certainly not had a problem with it), the N5 which has no daytime equivalent nor the N550/N551 of which have run with no route that necessarily exists alongside it, and from 95 until 2008 was numbered N50. There were plenty of other examples going back through the 80s & 90s. The examples you listed aren’t the same - there was no daytime equivalent in those areas before those night routes were introduced and unlike using the N271 number, there was actual logic behind a lot of those numbers So what happens if TfL ever decided they want to reuse the 271 number?

Those on here who know more about timetabling than me may know the answer to this, but I was wondering whether the N271 running to North Finchley had anything to do with the most effective use of the allocated vehicles. To elaborate, the N271 can't turn in Highgate Village anymore so has to be extended. If this required extra vehicles to reach the next logical stand anyway, might it be a better use to continue to North Finchley rather than giving a longer layover? (Not sure about using the N271 number as it inhibits the reuse of 271 but there we are.) I had a brief look on the London Bus Routes website and interestingly, 271N is 2-3bph. It has a journey time of 23-25 mins during weeknights and 27-30 mins weekends. Essentially the 271N is run very thin during weeknights, with 2bph & 8 mins at the stand at both Moorgate and Highgate. During the weekends that goes out of the window! Extending the N271 to North Finchley does make proper use of resources, and justifies the investment by TfL who has probably had requests by Metroline to add an extra bus on all nights of the week.

I am probably missing something obvious regarding the N271 discussion but I don't see the issue. Passengers will soon realise the 271 no longer runs so not like they will be confused by a N271 or might not even see the service.

If reused, it would likely be reused far away from the N271 I’d have thought. No problem with a new 271 route in (eg) Croydon, Bexleyheath or Uxbridge.

We used to have the 278 in east London until 1993 then it was used again from 94 - 04 in South East London then again in west London from 2019.
"If" there was a need for the N271 number to be used elsewhere in the future then I guess the current N271 could be renumbered but unlikely.

Is there any need for a N271 in the first place? Seems profligate in my view frankly given there are a bunch of 24 hour / N routes nearby

Probably renumber it the N263 as most of the route follows the 263 I agree the N263 is the obvious number as it will follow the 263 route from East Finchley to Highbury Corner. The 271 number can be completely retired and potentially used elsewhere sometime in the future. Otherwise you can imagine the scenario if the new 271 gets a night service that differs from the daytime route but the N271 number can't be used because it still exists in Highgate.

Direct link to places like Holloway and Archway which have a large young population. In my view the North Finchley section is less justifiable. Essentially following the well established N20 and serving the High Road which in the grand scheme of things is really not that far from other night routes.

As an N prefix is going on anyways I wonder if the previous extention to Liverpool Street would be useful to capture the Shoreditch nightlife.

Even after a consultation people still don’t accept what TfL is proceeding with and making alternative suggestions. I hope all those being so vocal made their feelings know in the consultations stage.

In sure they already had the 234 alternative planned out so they could pretend they were changing the proposals in light of comments about the 143.

I agree that the 271 number would not be reused that quickly. There’s a few lower numbers that can used instead such as 10, 48, and the 84 and 168 would be available as well in the near future
