Personally don’t see the point in renumbering a route that is extended especially when you have other examples of routes that have fairly big changes including swapping of direction (300) which won’t be renumbered. There is only the 10,82 and 84 in the lower numbers available if they wanted to keep in that range.

Can’t believe you forgot the 48 😂 I'd be amazed if the 1 number wasn't used, although I could construct a elaborate ruse to use 188 for the Hampstead Heath - Canada Water service and 1 for the TCR - North Greenwich route (based on the 188 previously running as far as Chalk Farm many years ago). However that would be a bit of a stretch. On the subject of the 48, apparently at one point the section between Aldwych and Bricklayers Arms was served by a route with that number, a forerunner of part of the 53 I think. But if I had to choose a different number, I'd go for 82 as a link to the old route of that number around Surrey Docks. All of which meandering brings me back to the 1 being the most likely - and best - number. I'm sure Hampstead residents would love the prestige of London's premier bus route.

The rich will get their way I still would have liked if the 1 was growing for it to return more to South London. They could still achieve that by keeping route 1 starting from Tottenham Court Road, but rerouted via Tower Bridge Road and extended to North Greenwich. Route 168 could then be diverted to Canada Water and route 188 withdrawn.

Similar to how the 199 was diverted via Greenwich in 1987 and renumbered 1 and the Routemaster operated 1 from Marylebone to Greenwich withdrawn.

Consultation update 21 March 2022
Between 22 November 2021 and 9 January 2022, we ran a consultation to understand your views on our proposals to merge routes 1 and 168 to create a new route for the local network between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water. We also proposed to reroute the 188 so it terminates at Tottenham Court Road instead of Russell Square.
We wanted to understand how the proposed changes might impact local residents, businesses and communities. We received 343 responses to the consultation in total. Thank you to those who took part and shared their views.
You can find the final consultation report in the ‘Documents’ section of this webpage, which includes detailed analysis of the consultation responses and our responses to issues frequently raised throughout the consultation.
Following careful consideration of all responses, we intend to proceed with the following proposals:
Merging routes 1 and 168, creating a new route operating between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water Renumbering the new route between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water as ‘Route 1’ Rerouting the 188 so that it terminates at Tottenham Court Road These changes are expected to come into effect in September 2023.

No real surprises here. I am pleased the route number 1 is being retained - although it will be appearing in some unfamiliar places! I suppose the big question for us as enthusiasts is how the contracts are reassigned/awarded.

I knew that would keep the 1 number over the 168! Surprised they are waiting until September 2023 especially as the 168 contract was extended so could have been withdrawn earlier and the current 1 tender terminated earlier with a new tender for the new combined route.

Route 1 used to run from Willesden (Pound Lane) via Brondsbury Park, Kilburn, Marylebone Road, Tottenham Court Road, Waterloo, Elephant & Castle, Rotherhithe, Deptford Broadway to Lewisham So will cross London again and Brondsbury isn’t that far from Hampstead

The only surprise to me is that this is going to take 18 months to implement. Surely it could be done almost immediately with the 168 on a contract extension that can presumably be terminated at short notice and Go Ahead should have the resources from frequency reductions elsewhere for the route 1 enhancement. It can then be retendered normally next year.

No surprises in the decision or timing. The 188 change gives Greenwich a 24hr link to Tottenham Court Road, which is a more useful destination than Russell Square. A good move all round.
