Without a doubt the best Christmas song is Fairytale of New York with “offensive” lyrics and all.

Without a doubt the best Christmas song is Fairytale of New York with “offensive” lyrics and all. Raido 1 has cut that "offensive" lyric out in around 2018.

I’m not really a Christmas song person but the general feeling amongst people I know is that the best Christmas album is ‘A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector’. A load of stuff from The Ronettes, The Crystals etc which despite being around 60 years old is still catchy now. However this year the one I want for number 1 has a title I can’t repeat on the forum….

In no particular order: Queen - Thank God its Christmas Darlene Love - All Alone for Christmas Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone Andy Williams - It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year The Darkness' Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) gets an honorary mention, as it was released when I was in the height of my Punk Rock 'grunger' phase! - Even to this day I'm baffled as to how it was pipped to the post for the Christmas No.1 by Gary Jules & Michael Andrew's version of Mad World. One Christmas song I hate though is Mariah Carey's All I want for Christmas is You. I despise it with passion!

The song that gets to me at Christmas is Roy Wood and Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day". Not so much the song itself - although as a joyous, rousing, over-the-top glam-rock Christmas anthem it is superb. It's the way at the end, they suddenly rein it all in and slow it right down, and Roy Wood sings a hearfelt "Why don't you give, your love, for Christmas". It still gets me every time.

Never bought any song for Chhristmas and do not see the fascination of getting a song for number 1 on Christmas day as it makes no sense whatsoever. It is as though we Brits have an obession of hitting number 1 like it means you have won something. Hitting number 1 for just one week means nothing. Keeping a single in the top 10 for weeks is more relvant and makes far more money than a single boosted for number 1. It is also why many UK artists fall off the cliff after. At Christmas over the years Simon Cowell has been guilty of this and in some ways has ruined it till we had that pathetic Rage against the machine song hit number 1 on Christmas day. I much prefer the hits that get played year after year even if they do not get to number one; that people want to listen to, instead of some dopey Christmas track for one year.

pathetic Rage against the machine song hit number 1 on Christmas day. Have no problem with you not liking it but to call it pathetic is harsh.

How can this thread go so far without mention of Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas”?!
Not saying it’s the best ever, but it’s a classic. Also have to shout out Slade, “Merry Christmas Everybody”

I find it was pathetic for people to just buy the song for a Christmas number 1 in protest to Cowell. There were many other ways to do this. The song had nothing to do with Christmas and more a joke imo

There were many other ways to do this. The song had nothing to do with Christmas and more a joke imo It was absolutely fitting in one sense in that it was a protest song that stopped another dull and uninspiring Simon Cowell pop act hit the number one with a lifeless song. On top of that, and I'm no metal fan at all, possibly one of my least favourite genres in fact, but "Killing in the Name" is a great song as I discovered when playing GTA San Andreas.
