The 59 in its various forms along the A23 corridor, once the famous Sunday only route from West Hampstead to Chipstead Valley and later rerouted to Old Coulsdon, then Farringdon Street and then Kings Cross in it's next life before being cut back to Euston a few years ago. The 59 also served Camden Town before it was rerouted to West Hampstead in 1947 - the 53A and 59 swapped routes north of Oxford Circus.

The 170 has covered a lot of ground. It was inaugurated as a tram replacement route in 1950, running from Wandsworth to Hackney. It was extended to Leyton, Downsell Road in April 1959 as part of the Trolleybus Replacement Programme. The route was then gradually whittled away at its eastern end and by the end of 1969 it was a Wandsworth-Bloomsbury route, extended at peak times to Shoreditch. The route's eastern extension to Roehampton, Danebury Avenue occurred in April 1981 and that terminus has at least remained consistent. The route assumed its Roehampton-Clapham Junction form in May 1991 when it was converted to midibus, and remained in this form for several years although the vehicles grew gradually larger. It assumed its current form in February 2008 when it was extended over route 239 to Victoria. The only section of the original 1950 route that is still served is the short section from Wandsworth Town Centre to Clapham Junction. Traditionally the 170 departed Wandsworth via York Road, supporting the 44 towards Battersea and did not connect Wandsworth and Clapham Junction. The only original part of the route left is the small section between the junction of York Road/Plough Road and the junction of York Road/Lombard Road.

The 18 and all its variants covered a large area. In 1934 the core 18 route was from London Bridge Station to Harrow Weald Garage, the outer terminus switched to Edgware Station in November 1940 with peak-hour journeys extended further to Aldenham LT Works in October 1941. Today's 182 and 186 are direct descendants of the 18, commencing in June 1970 when the 18 itself was cut back to Sudbury.
The 18A had two incarnations. In 1934 it was running from London Bridge to Park Royal with a peak-hours extension to Acton GWR Station (today's Acton Main Line). This route ended in October 1939. The number reappeared in June 1967 as a Monday-Friday peak-hour route between Acton (Gunnersbury Lane) and Kings Cross, operating via Victoria Road and Old Oak Lane rather than Park Royal. It survived until September 1982.
The 18B in 1934 ran between Finchley Memorial and London Bridge via the North Circular Road, joining the main 18 route at Stonebridge Park. It was cut back to Brent Station (now Brent Cross) in June 1939. The route was withdrawn in January 1962, being replaced by a much enhanced route 18 which also replaced trolleybus route 662 between Sudbury and Paddington Green.
The 18C in 1934 ran between Hanwell Bus Garage (renamed Southall in 1950 and closed in 1986) via Greenford and Sudbury to Wembley Empire Pool, except on Sundays when it diverted at Wembley Triangle to operate to King's Cross. Hanwell Garage was opposite today's Ealing Hospital site. The Kings Cross section was dropped in October 1939. If the 18C seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to today's route 92 that is hardly surprising - the route was renumbered in 1944 as by then it had little in common with the main 18.
Just to complete the story, the N18 was introduced in April 1984 as a new night bus route, although it largely duplicated the N91 which was withdrawn shortly afterwards. Initially operating between Sudbury and Liverpool Street Station, it was extended to Edgware (via Harrow, Harrow Weald and Stanmore) from April 1985 until October 1989, and also had journeys to Watford Junction from September 1987 until January 1994 when it settled down to its current Trafalgar Square-Harrow Weald form in January 1994.

The one I’ve always liked is the summer Sunday extension of the 47 all the way down to Knockholt Pound

For a start, you’ve missed all the southeastern parts that the 1 once covered, down to Lewisham, Catford and Bromley. There are also bits of the 72 you have missed, notably the Esher extensions.

I'm actually not quite sure what you meant in your brief. Is it how many different routeings they have taken, or what quite? Did my 111 answer satisfy the brief?

I'm actually not quite sure what you meant in your brief. Is it how many different routeings they have taken, or what quite? Did my 111 answer satisfy the brief? Yeah - it did - mainly because the 111 didn’t do a lot else apart from what it does currently and the other extensions you mentioned. What I mean really is to look for routes that have covered a lot of ground in their history, rather than just a snapshot of one particular incarnation of a route, which is what aaron1 did with his list. I’ll give another example : I could say that the 161 once went from Petts Wood to Woolwich, but what I’m really looking for is how much ground 161s have covered over the years, so you’d mention it once went to Sidcup Garage (Foots Cray) via Perry Street and Sidcup town centre, as well as the current run to North Greenwich, out to Bromley from Chislehurst via the current 162 and the periodic extensions to Abbey Wood via the current 180. Which gives the 161 a pretty large footprint, but maybe not as much as, say, the 12 or the 18.

The 89 is pretty much an east to west route these days but many moons ago it had a very healthy dive south all the way to what’s called the Aperfield Inn these days, just the other side of Biggin Hill

The 40's been about a bit. High Beach/Wanstead to Camberwell at one point, East Ham/Poplar to Norwood Junction at another, spells serving North Woolwich and Canary Wharf and finally today's Clerkenwell to Dulwich service.

The 89 is pretty much an east to west route these days but many moons ago it had a very healthy dive south all the way to what’s called the Aperfield Inn these days, just the other side of Biggin Hill Slightly less exotic, but the 89 also used to double back on itself and cover what is now the 132 to Eltham via Bexley and Blackfen. Garage journeys to New Cross Gate have also very much been a thing with the 89.
